EU anti-dumping rules on cheap Chinese bikes to stay post-Brexit after government U-turn

Bicycle Association welcomes “certainty” given by continuing EU measures aimed at preventing market being flooded with cheap imports

Brexit negotiations between the UK and the EU may be up in the air with just three weeks of the transition period remaining – but there is now clarity on one issue vital to the country’s cycling industry, with the government today performing a U-turn over scrapping anti-dumping measures on bicycles and e-bikes made in China.
Previously, the Department for International Trade (DIT) had indicated that it would do away with the trade defence measures, implemented by the EU in 1993 and extended a number of times since then (link is external) to currently expire at the end of 2024.
They are designed to prevent China flooding the EU market with cheap bicycles, forcing local manufacturers out of business and costing jobs, and also raising safety concerns.
The rules also apply to several other Far Eastern countries which Chinese manufacturers have tried to use to circumvent the measures.
Nothing surprised me about this government. Evil does not do it justice.

I give up trying to moderate this debate, Carry on name calling folks, it does no good, changes no ones mind and quite frankly a waste of both sides time.
Laughing, I remember you once posted something along the lines of politcs should be a core subject in schools, a good shout, which I couldnt agree more with
I come on these posts to learn from both sides of the debate & as I've often said on here, some very well educated people but my, don't they let themselves down with constant name calling & bullying, for what, a difference of opinion

Which passage? Is it only referring to airlines?

There is a problem with anything that might impinge on Trade, because no individual EU member country can negotiate a unilateral Trade Deal. That is one of the reasons we wanted to leave, then David Davis found it surprising that we couldn't negotiate a Trade Deal with Germany. Honestly, I'd be embarrassed to think I listened to these dickwads.
Lefty there is a passage in 5.2 about unilateral fishing rights, can't remember where the airline one was and I am about to watch the leeds game.

I am with you in as much I didn't think member states were allowed to negotiate their own agreements, the document seems to be threatening states that go down this route, but I am not sure.

I'll have a look later and get back to you.

1 takes into account if Covid. Are you really blaming that on Brexit'?

After that I give up.

It was £130bn at the end of 2019. Its safe to assume the cost by the 31st December will not be far off the £200bn figure. It will take years to recover this loss and that is assuming at the very least, we stand still post Brexit.

They do Erimus, and to be honest II have been guilty of it in the past with tory voters. These are life changing decisions and emotions run high. That said I am not excusing either some of the posts on here or some of my previous posts on other threads. It isn't fair nor right in a democracy to bully someone for voting contrary to your belief system.

I would agree with the no bluff thing except for one passage in the 12 page document, Lefty. They ask that member states do not enter into a unilateral agreement with the UK. It's not that they are asking that of member states, it's that it is in the document handed to the UK. That sounds like a bluff to me.

My understanding is that any member state can accept UK inbound flights and ignore the EU directive also.

Finally, this would really decimate the economy in parts of europe, Krakow, for example would be decimated over night about 99 out of every 100 tourists are brits for some unknown reason.

It may not be a bluff, I don't know.
imagine Benidorm without Brits, as if they are going to miss out on that revenue. The EU can give directives but you will see many countries ignore that.

And what a surprise... Two mates with accounts on here now saying they have been banned....

Praying for you and your friends hun.
I don't get it if im being honest... its been a heated debate but healthy. No one has been abusive. What is your justification/explanation for it other than you obviously don't like their political stance? does @rob_fmttm know your banning people for no reason again?

I don't know who's been banned but there has been some OTT abuse on this thread a few days ago.

Just to add to my post above WTF. You don't realise quite how vitriolic it can become when you are engaged in the bullying (for want of a better word). When I was reading this thread it made me very uncomfortable.

You need to re-read WTF. Any abuse around a persons voting rights is wrong, it impinges on democracy. I have been guilty of it in the past and it is plain wrong. Freedom to vote in any way we please is the keystone of a democracy.

Totally agree. I hope its people from both sides of the debate though
