Terry Venables has died

Watching that second video and listening to what he says you can understand how the man immediately got the respect of the players. No way that squad should have been at the bottom and it highlighted how wrong things were at the Club before he arrived. All he did was get the Club working in the right direction. It was a masked criticism of Robson and what was going on up until he arrived just before Christmas 2000.

While it was only for a short time he just seemed to fit the club perfectly (we were glamorous at the time and el tel was always glamorous) and I felt that if he'd stayed longer he would have been very successful.
RIP

It was a while before it was confirmed he wouldn't be returning. I know they came out with all this stuff about how he couldn't make it work due to his other commitments, but I wonder if he really didn't want to do the 'dirty' on Robbo (someone everyone liked, including El Tel) and officially take his job.

But Robbo was dismissed at the end of that season anyway so that wouldn't have been in his thinking.

I don’t think Terry V had any thought of staying at Boro. He was helping out a mate and when he saw that Robson had been sacked there was no interest in staying.

Some good books out there on Venners, in particular his autobiography which is very revealing and funny — nice Chrimbo pressie I’d suggest.

For those of us who were around at the time of the Euros, and following on to our revival under him, Venners came across as another one that the FA didn’t want to know.

Ok he delivered at the Euro 96 championships in terms of excitement but once the issues came out on his financial dealings then the FA quickly removed him.

He was another crafty cockney who definitely had more to him than his silver tongued approach. He was very much the special one (Jose) of the 1990s who probably didn’t get the credit he deserved.

I don’t know if it was that clear cut?

I am not even sure Robbo had officially left the club by the time McClaren’s impending arrival had been “leaked”? https://www.theguardian.com/football/2001/jun/05/newsstory.sport8

Robbo was trying to sign players in the immediate post-season of 2001. We were linked with Batistuta again (after he was a bit over the hill) and Robbo was involved.

I definitely remember Robbo being quoted as saying he “knew it was time to go” as if he was given the option of staying (possibly to work alongside McClaren how he had with Tel).

I’m sure Gibson said in the “Robbo” documovie that Robbo has suggested bringing in Tel.
