Terrible few days for American Civil Liberties

What a terrible few days it has been for civil liberties in the USA.

With yesterdays ruling against affirmative action and todays ruling against stopping discrimination based on sexual orientation, it appears that 2016 MAGA voters have now gotten almost everything they wanted, including overturning abortion rights. A sad state of affairs.

Nothing to do with MAGA, especially affirmative action situation where states such a California had already stopped the program in colleges and universities. As for the abortion law this has been passed onto the individual states to handle themselves.

With all due respect ES, I think it’s everything to do with MAGA. And here’s the simplest possible explanation why, without even getting into campaign finance, lobbying groups etc…

Polls have consistently shown that voters who support MAGA candidates like Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, are overwhelming likely to say the US should be a Christian nation (1). It follows then that Trump, having campaigned on and won the 2016 election with MAGA, wanted to implement policies that kept MAGA folks happy. Not all MAGA voters are the same, but since they are far more likely to believe the US should be a Christian nation, Trump installed three SCOTUS judges with deeply rooted, “traditional” Christian values to keep the majority happy. All three of Trumps appointed judges have history of speaking out against abortion rights and LGBTQ rights based on their own religious beliefs (2-4). Therefore it follows that those who voted for Trump, voted for MAGA, facilitated the nomination of these judges, and allowed for the decisions of the last couple of days to be possible.

I want to add that, broadly speaking, I do not hold any grudge against MAGA voters. My missus family has plenty, and I’m always happy to talk to them about politics and give them my opinion.

But, for example, if Clinton (awful candidate btw) had won in 2016, would the three decision recently made by SCOTUS on Abortion, Affirmative action and LGBTQ discrimination have gone the same way? Absolutely not. So MAGA definitely effected these decisions.

Not sure why it's an affront to Civil liberties. Affirmative action is nothing but racist in itself. Now colllage intake must be considered on ability and not race. If your son/daughter works their butt off to get higher grades then why should someone who didn't work so hard to improve their grades be admitted before your child due to race? Also whatever happened to MLK and his dream where a man may be judged on his character and not the colour of his skin

I don't believe that the Supreme Court is a MAGA court. It's different principles when it come to conservatism and liberal beliefs. And this name tag MAGA? I cannot see anything wrong with wanting to Make America Great Again

Hey Nash, how’s TN? I’m assuming that’s where you are! Did you get the heatwave up there? In FL here.

For what it’s worth, I never actually said it was a MAGA court, but I said MAGA voters have gotten what they wanted from the court. I’d be keen to know what you think a MAGA SCOTUS would look like though? I did also provide evidence that the judges appointed by the MAGA president have a history of being anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ because of their conservative religious beliefs. The inference being that the direction of travel in US law seems to be towards the Christian right.

Also, I’d be interested to know why you think affirmative action is racist?

Yes we are at 100 right now. I will respond later. Every time I log in it takes 10 mins to get to the page. Where abouts in Fla are you. I'm hoping to retire there next year. St pete beach area.

'I feel really sorry for all the normal people'

I don't think there's many of them in the US. Certainly not vocal ones. The USA is a total **** show, even worse than us
I'm not sure i'd trust them any more than the Russians.

Add to all that they have an ultra conservative, federal and Supreme Court judges due to Trump inspired appointees.
Biden was being urged to expand the membership of the SC with more liberal judges.

This is simplistic and fundamentally wrong view of the situation.
Look in to the Federalist society.
Look at the games GOP and the MAGA wings have played over supreme court picks (infarct judges at all levels not just SC.
Affirmative action in states like Kentucky ect is absolutely essential. People will miss out on the education they deserve because of this ruling.

People should be concentrating on the concerted attack on rights by the UK fascist government. USA can look to itself.
