Tell me something interesting about Middlesbrough…

One day in 1968 apparently the sky turned dark in the middle of the day in Middlesbrough. People thought the world was ending. It was actually a freak local weather event.
It did in Dean Bank, Ferryhill too, where I was in the infants school. I recall the teachers made us get under the desks. But that might be a memory I’ve made up in my head over the years.

Middlesbrough name is derived from the simple fact that it is equidistant from Edinburgh and Peterborough, it is the Middle - Borough.
And so ' The capital City /.Borough of Britain ' where north meets south . The Middlesbrough . Sounds good to me . On a map Middlesbrough is central to the UK .
Preston Park Museum says Saxons and Vikings invaded then settled here .
That will do for me . We are Saxons and Vikings, no wonder there are a few chewy chunks in our parts .

I was at school - Acklam Hall - and remember going outside into the quad playground by the science labs to experience the darkness.

I don't remember much more. I do remember walking home in torrential rain but can't be 100% sure it was that day. I think it was though because I remember it being very gloomy rather than pitch black. This would have been odd for July at school leaving time. Being July I had a school blazer on - no coat - and was soaked through - literally had water running over my body.

I don't remember anyone being scared at the time.

The problem with memories though is that they can be affected by the subsequent explanation of the event. I may be remembering it as a one off weather event rather than my actual experience of the day.
I was in Sacred Heart(Next to Ayresome park gates) and was going home for dinner.I lived in Bow street,we got soaked and it was scary.Total darkness at mid day, my mam was praying to get it to stop.

Historical or current that someone who isn’t from there might not know.
Middlesbrough roads are very unlike Clive Sullivan Way, the A63 to get into Ferensway, Hull takes a bit of beating for its very poor gridlocked roads.

Even the Howden Ouse Bridge is taking an incredibly long time to repair (18month so far), we have one 50 times the size and they work under it no bother.
I used to visit Hull sometimes 5 or 6 times a month, the people are second to non but the roads pfffft.

Rant over.
