Middlesbrough and Reading are the two largest towns not classed as cities in England. It was a while ago when I read that so with population growth it may be different today.

The very centre of Middlesbrough is opposite the Custom House on North St, the site of an ancient priory, of St Hilda and previous to that, St Cuthbert. At one time there were 9 altars, I think, within the chapel walls, which bears to it's eccliastic importance.

In 1801, Middlesbrough was a small farming township with a population of just 25. 25 ! The whole town was the size of a championship squad ( not including U21's ) Don't ask e who played LB though
