Teesside Bands 1975 - today

I posted on here once that my late brother had a rare record fully signed by all from a local group 'Noway' punk band I think
I recall him telling me the record only made 26 cuts

I'm doing a bit of research about bands and musicians from Teesside from 1975 - the current day. Ideally, I want to identify 'influential' bands that has a real 'vibe' about them... 'they could've made it but...'. I don't want the Chris Reas, Maximo Parks ones - more like, in my head bands like White Negroes, The Lovehearts, The Guests, Hangmen, Carl Green and the Scene etc. AND ideally, if there is a story about them - perhaps happy - but also tragedies... I'm contacting a few people - I know Kingsley Chapman did a musical mind map for example, but equally, I'm interested in other genres - blues, folk etc. And finally, IF they had any songs about Teesside please mention that! I hope it can be thread that people will enjoy from a reminiscence point of view, but it will also directly influence a 'show' I am producing in 2021... many thanks in advance.

Have you read the book No Sleep Till Saltburn. Mark Gregory the author used to be on fmttm. Gives a good insight into the Heavy Metal scene in the area.

I think they were mid 80s?? Around the same time as I, (along with dozens of others!) did a gig with The Lovehearts - who had a brass section, string quartet, backing singers and singer Brocky in a dress. The other link is that one night they were supported by the ORIGINAL Wildcats of Kilkenny fronted by the genius Hugh McShane along with sadly no longer with us Andy Jones and one of the Redcar O'Sullivan brothers I think - all at The Dovecot. I remember ringing Hughie some years later to ask if I could 'have' the name for my band after falling out with Shane MacGowan. Mental days but good ones.
Basczax were late Seventies before morphing into Flaming Mussolinis early Eighties.

Teesside punk scene was as good as anywhere outside the major cities, No Way, The Filth, Blitzkrieg Bop, Discharge, End Result, Monitor, Vultures, Penny & The Rims, La Low Life, Sines, I could list loads more.

Seem to have been around for ages and still going strong..........Pellethead.

Great band who contribute much more than just playing gigs.

Smac put on a lot of good gigs in the back room of the Sun over the years.
Jarvis Humby and the Magic b***ds were 2 of the best local bands I saw over the years.
Some very good musicians around at time, a few unfortunately no longer with us.
Remember seeing the Magic b***ds support Rob's lot. Another shout for the Flaming Mussolinis....thought they were about to make it big in around 86.

A few years ago a mate of mine asked me if I'd ever heard of a band called Wishbone Ash. I said 'yes, why?' He said 'I was chatting to a smashing fella on the train all the way back from London. When we changed at Darlo I saw he had a guitar with him, so I asked if he was in a band I might know. The guy said probably not, but he'd been in a band I might have heard of called called Wishbone Ash. I'd never heard of them. He said they'd had a little bit of success here in the 70's and were quite well known in the States and Europe for a while, but not exactly a household name. He reckoned their twin lead guitar sound had been quite influential on a few bands I would have heard of, which he was quite proud of. I'd have asked a lot more, but he got off at Yarm. I said as he was getting off 'what are you doing up here then, have you got a pub gig or something?'He said 'No, I live here.'

I've no idea if this is true or if it was someone who knew his music having my mate on, as I've not heard of any particular Teesside connection to explain why one of them would settle here, but there is no doubt that Wishbone Ash were hugely influential. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynrd and Thin Lizzy all cited them as influences.

Also the era of The Flaming Mussolinis! I feel like I have loads of 80s ones - and post 2000.... But, whether its because I ended up playing in every Irish Bar in the UK and beyond, the 1990's are less familiar for me to remember the bands and acts.

Mike, I have Alan Savage on my personal Facebook if you want to pick his brains. Another shout for President, great group of lads, I shot their 30 year get together last year which was brilliant. You mentioned Carl Green and he is still going as lead singer in his band Head of Light Entertainment. Empires and Dance from Redcar were pretty brilliant too as I recall.

Head of Light Entertainment are a band that make me smile every gig, all gig.

Didn't Local Girl Claire Hamill sing with Wishbone Ash at some point ?

A band I can remember from the mid 70's, and appeared a few times at The Westminster pub, were Aviary Jim
