Team rebuild

If Carrick stays and we end up sticking with a version of 4231 what do we need to really improve us? Assuming two players for each position and that no one wants to leave (which is very possible).

GK Brynn and Dieng.
RB Dijksteel and Ayling out. 2 new players in, one being a major signing.
LB Engel and Borges out. Bangura plus one major signing.
CB RVB, Dael and Leninhan. Edmundson out. One in.
CM Morris and Hackney. Barlaser out. Two in.
LW McGree probably out. Two in, one being a major signing.
RW Whittaker. One major signing in.
AM Azaz plus one major signing in.
CF Conway and Coburn.

There may be room for young players like Dede, Hunt, McCabe etc to step in but I doubt they will be in contention for the two player slots - they'd be a third in case of injuries, perhaps playing 10 games or so as the season progresses.

If Hackney goes we'd need a seriously good extra player. If RvDB goes that might be less of an issue but we would still need to replace him. If Coburn goes we'd need a quality replacement for that slot.

That's a minimum of 5 major signings plus 5 less major ones. Assuming no sales other than as above. How realistic can we be at this stage in the new model as to who we could get?

What do you all reckon?
GK Brynn and a new keeper (Dieng is out until Christmas)
RB A new RB will be needed and Ayling will be back-up
LB A new LB will be needed and Borges will be back-up. Sell Bangura
CB Keep VDB, Fry, Lenihan and sign new CB. Not bothered about Edmundson either way
CM Hackney will probably leave. Keep Morris and give McCabe a chance. Sell Barlaser and sign 2 new midfielders
RW Keep Whittaker and sign a pacy winger
AM Keep Azaz and sign another 10
LW Loan Illing-Jr for another season and sign another LW. Keep Burgzorg for squad depth and sell McGree
ST Keep Conway and Coburn and sign a pacy striker.

When you consider the 5 loans available which I think everyone championship team should look to use minimum of 3 before January, we are in a good position going into the new season.

Just one small detail needs changing and I'll be optimistic.

There will always be someone who disagrees with my choices , like the one a few posts below , but he can’t produce a better list himself.

4 key players for the first 11.

CB. Experienced, good communicator, leader.

Athletic right back who does the basics defensively very well but offers an outlet too.

CM leader. Experienced, positionally disciplined. Good leader, motivator.

Pacey wide player, good ball carrier, forces teams back.

Add all that and you go up at least a level for me. Not cheap, but should be doable for what we received for Lath.

Bonus, but harder to find, is someone who can do a similar role to what Chuba did.

So you would have something like:

........................ Brynn......................

RB............ VDB............ CB.......... Borges

.................... Morris...... CM..................

Whittaker? ............. Azaz............... LW

...................... Conway........................

But then of course you need good competition for a number of positions too (are Forss and McGree finished or what? Big question for the club there).

Particularly centre forward, attacking midfield and centre midfield.

I'd definitely keep Coburn for a season too. It may be harsh if he doesn't get much game time, but as a plan B there isn't much better at championship level. And he has a chance of making himself plan A anyway.

We should be aiming for 3 top quality loans from the Premier league to supplement a couple of big money permanent signings. The gap to the Premier league is bigger than ever and squads are packed full of quality players not getting games. We should take advantage of our reputation for improving young prospects. I’d be going for pace, athleticism and work rate over anything else as the only way we will get the most out of the players we have in forward areas is to get the ball to them more quickly and support them in numbers.

Yep. 2 or 3 quality first team permanent signings, supplemented by 3-4 quality loan signings.

Plus a few of the usual £1-2m punts / projects we do every summer, I would imagine 😅

Musaba on a free is a great call.

I like Emil Riis but I'd rather us keep Coburn and look to sign a striker in the same mould as Lath.

Yeah I’ve said that too. A better balance in midfield alongside Morris… especially if you’re going to play Azaz and Whittaker in front of them!
You can’t play Azaz and Whittaker in the same team and expect to be able to defend well, especially in a 4-2-3-1, you would need to play a 3 instead of the 2 and they would have to be bruiser/battlers, proper big hard tacklers, we haven’t got 1 in the club at the moment.

I meant to add that I'd try to move Burgzorg and Forss on too. Neither fit the system as wide players and Coburn is twice as good as a centre forward.

I think we need a lot, and while previously I didn't think players like Dolan were good enough for us, when you compare him to players like Silvera, we already know he can do a particular job/is proven so your not messing about trying them out and then sending on loan to double check there's not a diamond hidden in the sh it.

Its another bloody major overhaul.

There's a few good ones in there, Key (or Kev as we call him due to Swansea having stubby Y's on their shirts), I think Pollock is a decent shout, and while I imagine Rhys will be terrible for us at least it stops him scoring.
I'd have Dolan, take a risk on getting the John Swift who was at Reading if Azaz was sold and I'd try for illing Jnr on loan for the full season as he and bangura are the type of fullback we need, there no room for good defenders at left back for us, single minded attackers from that position are all we should go for.

I'll list who I'd keep

Gk: Dieng and Sol - depends who else is available but both have proven at one time that they're capable moreso Dieng
Rb: Dijksteel - versatile squad player
Lb: Borges - see above
Cb: Fry - proven wouldn't necessarily be a starter
Cm: Morris - reminds me Clayton, needs the right pairing
Rw: Whittaker - give him the season
Lw: Burgzorg - squad player, only plays from the left - not a right winger at all
Am: Azaz
St: Conway, Coburn

Not sure: Mcgree - depends what his doctors are saying and what his injuries are
