Team rebuild

If Carrick stays and we end up sticking with a version of 4231 what do we need to really improve us? Assuming two players for each position and that no one wants to leave (which is very possible).

GK Brynn and Dieng.
RB Dijksteel and Ayling out. 2 new players in, one being a major signing.
LB Engel and Borges out. Bangura plus one major signing.
CB RVB, Dael and Leninhan. Edmundson out. One in.
CM Morris and Hackney. Barlaser out. Two in.
LW McGree probably out. Two in, one being a major signing.
RW Whittaker. One major signing in.
AM Azaz plus one major signing in.
CF Conway and Coburn.

There may be room for young players like Dede, Hunt, McCabe etc to step in but I doubt they will be in contention for the two player slots - they'd be a third in case of injuries, perhaps playing 10 games or so as the season progresses.

If Hackney goes we'd need a seriously good extra player. If RvDB goes that might be less of an issue but we would still need to replace him. If Coburn goes we'd need a quality replacement for that slot.

That's a minimum of 5 major signings plus 5 less major ones. Assuming no sales other than as above. How realistic can we be at this stage in the new model as to who we could get?

What do you all reckon?

Dieng won’t be fit until christmas
Ayling won’t be going
Engel is in USA until christmas, doubt Borges will go
Edmundson won’t be going, 4th choice cb
Hackney is likely to leave
Coburn will be sold

GK Brynn, new reserve keeper and glover (sell Dieng in Jan).
RB new youngish pacey rb and Ayling out.
LB Borges and Bangura possible trade one out and a new pacey LB
CB RVB, and Edmundson. Dael and Lenihan to go. New first choice powerful and leader cb, plus a younger reserve
Cm Morris and new starter cm. Howson stays, one young backup cm
LW McGree and a new pacey lw
RW Whittaker. One major signing in.
AM Azaz plus one major signing in.
CF Conway and a pacey cf

So 5 or 6 major signings and 4 younger backup ones

Hackney, coburn, rvb go plus latte & jones money... we surely have at least 55-600milliin to strengthen the squad. If carrick cant get us promoted with that then hes useless

All these players to go?
Who is going to want them?
Nearly all are on good contracts here and better than they will get elsewhere.
Think we are probably stuck with most of them

Sell your best players, replace them with cheaper ones, and if you can’t get us promoted after that you’re useless!

We spent the jones money alongside the million from Rodgers England cap on Whittaker

CF
RW
LW
CM (x2 if Hackney goes)
LCB
RB
Plus goalkeeper surely?
Once a joint pops out, it is increasingly likely to do so again in the future. His shoulder will get a lot of attention and Glover is a poor number 2. If we can’t afford Travers then I’d try to get Kaminski from Luton

Hackney will go as his ambitions understandably are higher than another season with us.
Brynn will be the keeper but nowhere near the quality of Travers or of a keeper you need to win this league.
Apart from Borges and Bangura I wouldn’t be bothered if any of the other defenders left but understand we have to keep some mainly because nobody else will have them and they are under contract.
Morris needs to get back to his best quickly - same with Azaz but again not bothered if they both go and get replaced with better players. We are stuck with Whitaker but the rest of the midfield can go for me - McGree, Forss, Burgzorg, can all go for me. Barlaser obviously as well.
Up front Conway is a good back up to whoever we bring in as a starter - I think Coburn will go but shows just how light we are up top.
Hope a new manager gives some of the youth players a chance next year as we simply don’t have the funds to replace the dross.
Can’t wait for August and the start of the new season 😂

I hope youth gets a chance too, but let’s not pretend we won’t have funds or that the whole squad is dross

Will the current tactics work without 2 or 3 absolutely outstanding key players like Doak or LL, or a fully fit McGree?

Rewind 12/18 months with Smith at RB and after that Ayling would create goals and overlap effectively with whoever we had on the RW, but we lost that this year. Is Ayling going to get back at that level?

Is Mcgree ever going to a player that we can rely on?

Forss has been a disappointment. I wonder whether his series of injuries have taken their toll. Or is he onky a clear pre-season away from being the player he once was?

We cannot solely rely on Azaz.

Lots of questions for the management to consider, especially is these tactics and formations are not going to change

I'm quite jealous of the naivety that you can just get rid of anyone that you don't want anymore. Who on earth is going to take Ayling off our hands? And if anyone did, why would he want to leave because there's no way they'd offer him anything like what we're paying him.

As for the £55-60m thing, as Keano would say, cuckoo land. What makes people think that any money we receive in transfer fees will be spent on buying players? A small portion of it will be. The vast majority will be spent on keeping the club running. Let's make no bones about it - Middlesbrough Football Club is a terrible business. It haemorrhages money. The only two things keeping it afloat is the ability to sell our best players for millions of pounds and the chairman putting his own cash in.

Oh, and we're not getting anywhere near the play offs with Conway & Coburn as our only strikers. No

The last 2-3 years that is what we have done. Net spend around zero.

The transfer side of things “pays for itself” and Gibbo puts his hand in his pocket for the running the club side of things

We need some experience and pace.
Wish we would play five at the back. Then you can carry a player like howson or borges to bring the ball out. And Conway lacks the attributes to play up front on his own.
some width on the right. Team set up was just a disaster after January. Too narrow too slow. Too many similar players. lacking players that would work to provide cover for the defence. Lacking bite in midfield. Hackney leaving could end up being a blessing if we get a biter in midfield. No way he should have been playing in a two.
