I wonder what the odds are on both of your midfielders getting a twisted knee injury in the same game (at Preston), and both in the last five minutes of the match. That is definitely what is termed as ‘typical Boro’.

Agree on this other than Clarke central and mcnair on the left, Clarke is much better as a traditional central CB he is too exposed when playing more expansive, Clarke, Fry,Rav,lenihan are all really good CB in a defensive back 4 but struggle when asked to play a more pragmatic approach IMO.

We can still play pretty football with a more rigid defensive unit, with one midfielder who sits and breaks up the rest can go and play and when 1 fullback goes that CDM covers the gaps etc, it's not hard really if players have a brain, the ugly side of the game is the easiest bit.
 
And absolutely no body on this thread ,those who are offering a suggestion on which team , is even mentioning “ Awful Ayling” or “Terrible Thomas” … they both need binning and quickly… I want Carrick to succeed , but he must be blind or watching something something very different to the rest of us. These two are garbage and keeping our own players out , it’s all that’s wrong with the modern game … loan players who do not improve championship squads,

After many weeks of wanting him to do well and trying to give him a chance , I’ve decided that Greenwood is not good enough either, it has shades of Aaron Connolly … busy but achieves nowt. Our loans have been rank this season

I think it's unfair to single Clarke out, the whole team had an awful game and time and time again he swept up Thomas's mess.

My team would be

I want Barlaser and Thomas absolutely nowhere near this team
 
I think you can only really accommodate a player like Barlaser if you have a fully defensive minded player either next to him or sitting behind him. He can't be the player that comes deep to collect the ball off the defenders or the keeper and bring it out of defence cause he's shown time and time again he's a liability when he does. You need to be good at both sides of the game to do that, and he has a decent enough range of passing and vision, but his defensive ability and awareness is almost non-existent. It's even worse when he plays alongside Hackney and then you have two players that basically want to play the same exact way and we're even more exposed.

He needs someone that's gonna sit back there and do the defensive legwork, play the simple passes that connect defence to midfield and go from there. That's why I'd give McNair a go there as a holding player, no expectation on him to get forward, can drop back to form a three in defence as and when needed or to cover a gap, just sit there in front of the defence to cover and break up play, play the simple passes in to midfield and build from there. Has played there a lot in his career as it is, still plays there sometimes for Northern Ireland, can't be any worse than what we have at the moment.

Forss had a good first half, Clarke and rav did fine. Those three can hold their heads up.

Our big issues were fullbacks were too easily beaten and poor in posession

Cm we’re poor at receiving under pressure and getting us up the field

Lath was isolated

McGree and greenwood were largely ineffective and uncreative
 
I think we have to either play wing backs to give us that extra body in defence when the midfield in front of them haven't won a tackle in 3 months or as much as I hate him there you have to put McNair in midfield just so we have someone with some sort of defensive ability in midfield.

I'm assuming McNair is the only other fit centre back? Wing backs with McNair in midfield would be ideal with the way we are defending at the moment but I'm not sure we have anyone else other than VDB and Clarke?

I agree with that team with McNair as a sort of halfback. It should make the team more solid without ripping up the full Carrick ball style.

On a side note, is Ayling deliberately playing crap - he was always a consistent 7 out of 10 player for Leeds. Maybe he just doesn’t like us 😳

A back 3 with Ayling on the right,VDB centre and Clarke on the left.
Dijksteel and Engel (we are desperate remember) as wing backs.
A midfield 3 of McNair, McGree, and O’Brian with McGree pushing forward.
2 up top in Lath and Forss.

Gives us solidity and a threat upfront.
 
Who played well yesterday? nobody, we were all over the place (Again), Ayling Thomas very poor, O'Brien Barlaser shocking, Forss McGree Greenwood uninterested & Lath the headless chicken up front, (to be fair he did run about a bit)
We had no drive, no passion. no leaders on the pitch. What was the talk at halftime, did they get a Bollo**ing and told to step it up in the 2nd half ? We regressed in the 2nd half and made Stoke look good, we were lucky it was only 2-0.


Not sure who I would pick for Wednesday night, I would like/hope the loan players are on the bench, Dijksteel Engel McNair Azaz replacing
(Ayling Thomas O'Brien & Greenwood) that would be a start.

If Norwich score it could be a long night..

He’s a player that was always strong in the physical quadrant he was never a technical player, bad fit for me
