Team for Plymouth on Saturday

How does it go.... "Never change a winning team"

If the team that started against Leicester last week are all fit, then keep it the same..They all deserve another game.

Plymouth will sit back and defend so our tactics will have to change slightly..

yes, and personnel and formation is only part of tactics. What matters more than anything is when in possession that we move the ball quickly, get players into pockets of space, and don't take too long to shoot. Out of possession don't get caught over committing, you do that by delaying the other team when they have the ball, don't go to ground don't over commit to a tackle that isn't there to be won.

It's not that 4231 isn't the correct formation for us, we just need to have the right players playing in the right positions.

It didn't work for us using Greenwood as the striker in that set-up, but Silvera has been effective for us playing as a false 9, and having McGree and Azaz playing in those attacking midfield roles has resulted in us playing much better football, and looking a bigger threat going forward.

This would be my team:

Dieng (if fit)

Ayling
McNair
VDB
Engel

Barlaser
O'Brien

Forss
Azaz
McGree

Silvera

interesting to see the heat maps.. any formation will never show you the intricacies of a teams set up.. but hear you can at least see the positions in the two main phases of play.. it would be interesting to see what our formations do look like based of the heat maps in both phases of play.

3CB worked for me Paddy and Clarke can and do step into midfield when we set up like that and would enable us to get the most out of Izzy and whoever we play LWB all 3 of the players we have for that position are better suited to that I feel.

I think Mr Carrick has realised that if Paddy McNair is fit then he plays.
It is going to be a sad day if we let him go for nothing.
Against Plymouth I would have 4 names on the team sheet and not particularly in this order. If they are fit then McNair,Riley McGree,Azaz and either of our keepers, because they are both good ( with special near post attention from Glover). Starting with those 4 Boro will beat Plymouth.
Our best defensive displays this season have come with McNair in the team. If Howson isn't fit, he can play as a ball playing centre back flanked by Clarke on the left and RVB on the right. Azaz is starting to look like an astute signing, maybe not as eye catching as Morgan Rogers but perhaps more effective. Riley would be the first name on the team sheet for me, we have so much more energy when he plays.

Yeah carrick has said quite a few times that he is not obsessed about formation and it’s pretty fluid throughout the game.

Heat maps are a great tool, especially look good for box to box players

No chance I'd have thought of us sticking to 3 at the back in a game where we are expected to dominate possession although don't Plymouth like to also ( or at least under Schumacher) so maybe it will be clever to set up like that?

Anyway I expect

Glover

Ayling
McNair
vdB
Engel

Barlaser
O'Brien

Forss
Azaz
McGree

Silvera

I recon that’s how we start. Although paddy as LCB and Rav at RCB

formations are meant to be fluid......it's not netball 🤣

Clearly he did cover across that left side, I'd like to see the other player heatmaps, because someone must have been central to support Dan B more often, was Azaz dropping deep, I don't remember it, maybe McGree

thinking about how they line up, then 3 at the back might cause issues as they have good wide players who like to cut inside and support a single forward. We will leave ourselves exposed at fullback positions if we play wing backs. Second thoughts, I'm going 4 at the back too, the only difference I would consider from this team is Thomas at LB for Engel, purely because Whittaker is mobile and their danger man.....and Dieng if fit in goal

According to Carrick, McNair played the same role against Leicester as Howson did. Not sure I believe Carrick because I think he tries to keep a certain amount of mystery about how he sets us up.
The only team with a worse away record than Plymouth is Rotherham, so we all know what is going to happen.
I suspect that Carrick will return to his standard 4-2-3-1 but I think the shape against Leicester works pretty well. Carrick implied that Forss and Greenwood were rotated for freshness so what I suspect to see is
Dieng/Glover
Ayling - RVDB - Clarke/McNair - Thomas
Barlaser - O'Brien
Forss - Azaz - McGree
Silvera

At this point that probably gets as many of our best players in their best positions though I still think that we'll score more with Forss central and Silvera on the right.

Against Leicester we played with a 5-4-1 with the 4 being a diamond. I think we can do that with Plymouth while still attacking

McGree - O'Brien
