Team for Chelsea if Jones doesn't make it?

He will play 5 across the back. Engel will be left back. Right back will be between VDB and McNair, if he is available. Carrick will protect his wingbacks with Forsse and oBrien tracking back, assuming Jones isn't available. Forsse will be more valuable right wing as he does track back and help out, so he won't be playing through the middle.

We will have no real pace up front so I think he will go with Coburn for his hold up play to relieve pressure. Rogers will play for his ball carrying skills.

I think Azaz will be dropped to the bench, we need to play as a unit. Not sure if Azaz is cuptied. If not I don't think he will play, he hasn't developed any kind of understanding yet.

I would find a place in the back 3 for Clarke. He was a threat (albeit missed his chances) from corners today but will head stuff away all day long.
 
I think it almost kills it for me with jones now being on the never ending injury list. As said on this thread he was our only pacy outlet with lathe being injured. Chelsea will be fresh from their winter break. We need a miracle, lucks not on our side at the moment
 
Toughest decision of Carrick's reign so far.
Jones out leaves us so unbalanced it's terrifying.

If it was Humanly possible..
I'd go with as much experience as possible..
When they have the ball ( and they'll have a lot ) we need it to be as slow as possible ( bit like the 2nd half of the first game )

I’ve said it for ages now, we are far too open playing this 4231. The 523, or whatever you want to call it, suits us far better. I’d stick to it even against teams like Rotherham but hey ho 🤷‍♂️

Azaz, Greenwood and Ayling are all cup-tied.

He'll go with Crooks up top and play with wing-backs I reckon. Possibly this

You have a point, but without Jones - who has improved this season and defensively - it's difficult to see us achieving much attacking width with the personnel at our disposal. For the league, we need to see how the 4231 will hold up when we have a full squad back. I think we have too many players in our front four at the moment who can make poor decisions and invite pressure from turnovers. Hopefully McGree will replace Greenwood and we may sign a striker who can hold the ball up. It's good we have 523 as an option though.

I think Howson, Hackney and Barlaser will all start, with O'Brien and Forss the wide players/wb's.
I'd play Clarke, Fry and VdB as back 3.
No place for Engel.
If fit O'Brien simply has to play.

Crooks, Rogers or Coburn for the No10 and CF remaining places.
It will be perm 2 from 3 of them through the match, unless he switches Forss up top during the match.
If we do get a chance, then I hope it falls to Forss.

If Jones and LL are injured, Azaz and Greenwood unavailable, McGree and Silvera away, Hoppe and Gilbert not fancied, then choices further forward are restricted.
 
I don't think Forss at RWB is out of the question. I can't see how else we play 5 at the back. If we play Rav there we don't have a 3rd centre back unless McNair is fit or Howson (who might be injured anyway) drops into CB.

I can’t see us playing wing backs if Jones, Dijksteel are unavailable.

I don't think anybody would see Forss ongoing as our RWB - or even us playing WB's.
My suggestion was based purely on this fixture and difficult circumstances.
Is Dijksteel nowhere near fit?

I would strongly prefer O'Brien to Engel, even if O'Brien would be better in the middle.
