It doesn’t sound like a decision the club made…
Looks like Tav wanted the move and it’s no point keeping him if he doesn’t want to stay and we can get a good price…
I’m disappointed he’s leaving but good luck to him where ever he ends up..

Don't talk sense mate.
Like footy manager, the club should have just declined the offer, played him in his preferred position, offered him a bigger contract, etc.
In reality, he wanted to go. He's been offered Premier football, a more lucrative contract and a nicer place to live.

I don't think I am adding anything new here. I think Tav moving was, ultimately, inevitable. I don't bear him any malice - he is young, ambitious lad, who has never given anything less than 100% for us - even in the pre-season friendlies, reports were very positive about him. People have been a bit sniffy about his choice of new club, but they offer him the certainty of at least a season up in the Prem, a year where he can test himself and prove himself, with relatively little pressure and expectation. I wish him well. It's now up to the club to work out whether to twist or stick.

Because obviously our better players are in the shop window, and given the season jones had i would be expecting intrest. 😕

That's one way of looking at it, another way of looking at it would be:-

1) He wanted to go, Jones doesn't
2) Jones is on a longer contract than Tavernier and therefore we wont lose him for nothing in the near future
3) Because we've sold Tavernier, we dont have any pressure to sell any other player

The club are famously as silent as possible on transfer dealings. I can't recall us ever issuing a statement like this before a deal is done, let alone one that includes a quote like "him wanting to move".

This must have come out of the blue and really pished off a lot of people at the club for them to break cover like this.

It was widely reported (or mentioned at least), that as our prized assets Tav and Fry had been persuaded to give us another year to try and get promoted.

It seems fairly likely that Tav has had his agent looking for a PL contract if it didn't happen, we've offered him an improved contract he doesn't want to sign, so we lose him for £5/£6 million next summer anyway in his last 12 months.

We are cashing in now to try and build the squad the manager wants.

I have no issue with this at all, selling academy products and frees (or near enough) that we pick up like Spence & Jones for £12-£15 million isn't a massive detriment to the club. It allows us to keep building and puts us massively inside FFP to 'have a go' with our own spending.

The key part will be adequate replacements for less investment though.

I like Tav, full of energy and running, gave us good balance but his movement/intelligence on and off the ball wasn't great (although improving). His shooting and set pieces are well below par and could easily be improved on.

Thank you Tav, never let us down, never quite reached the heights I expected you to on breaking into the first team.

If Scott, Bausor and ultimately Wilder do their jobs well enough, I think we may well be swapping places with his new club next season.

I can only help but think back to last year when Warnock said something along the lines of Tavernier and Fry won't be with us long if we stay in the Championship, he also said that Steve (Gibson) knows that as well.

Maybe we promised them last year that if they stick with us one more season, then they are free to go next summer if we get a good enough offer.

We know Fry wants to stay at the club/area and maybe McNair has bought into Wilder's ambition? Tav's agent has been feeding him with rumours of a PL move and he's been taken in by the idea?

The club haven't issued a formal statement.

Wilder was asked a question & he answered it.

I admit it is unusual for the club to put it on the web site though.

At the end of the day contracts are meaningless when a player wants to go and has a good agent to back him up then the club can do nothing other than get the best price for the player.

Every player at every club has a price. We got a good one for Tav, and hopefully for Jones if he keeps improving and like Tav, wants to leave
Exactly, what ever level you play if your offered the chance to play with and against better players you have to take it.We all talk about players that could or should have done so but they usually either lacked ambition or in reality not quite good enough to be given the opportunity.

Huh, I fail to see the correlation between Tavernier leaving and Jones leaving ?
I see it, the correlation is that Jones sees a good player leave and then thinks about things himself, talks to his agent. Agent, player, and circling clubs all realise now that boro will sell and are perhaps an easy touch its about the domino effect and the potential realisation for the better players that boro are not promotion contenders and are at the same time an easy touch. Having said this, I rank financial stability above boom and bust promotion campaigns, we will re build and move on!
