Tavernier - Goalscoring Stats

Think this demonstrates one of, if not the biggest thing that makes him such a key player (and why he's caught the eye of premier League clubs despite modest scoring stats up till now).

It's rare for an attack minded midfielder, one who's comfortable in possession, can beat a man, carry the ball effectively etc to also be so good at doing the dirty work too. Helps massively with the balance of the team between attack and defence.

Think I've previously likened him to an all-rounder in cricket. Gives the manager more options having someone good at both sides to the game.

exactly. It is very fashionable at present to counter the counter and press high up the pitch with attacking players. Judging Tavs output on Goals and Assists is shows a nieve and immature outlook to football.

I see him exactly the same as you mate. We are lucky to have him and think he’s going to be even better this season, he’s key to any success we may have

If all you see is a spreadsheet of stats you are really missing an awful lot. Coaches use stats as an aid to performance analysis not a measure of it (or at least the clued up ones do)

Lies, damned lies and statistics innit?

Tav is our main asset, our crown jewel, lets hope we can take him to the PL.

Great player who suits our number 8 position well, but lacks a footballing brain. In possession he is a very average footballer.
A great player that is very average in possession? 🤔

He must be fugging exceptional without the ball then! 🤦🏻‍♂️

agreed and lets be honest if he has a stella season scoring the goals he should and people put away the chances he creates, we could sell him for a lot more than 10m
Absolutely. Win win all round for me, if we’re promoted we have a top player to help us in the premier league and he can get better and better with us and if not and he still has a good individual season we will sell him on and wish him well.

Fantastic engine and stamina and I am a fan. I do find him frustrating though, because I think for every move he’s involved in, as many moves break down because of him. (Maybe that’s unfair, because I sometimes think it’s not always because of him, more the players around him who aren’t on his level/wavelength or who he doesn’t have confidence in, so is sometimes prone to keeping the ball one touch too long in and around the opposition box)
Part of the frustration is that he could and should be so much more effective, as he gets into some cracking positions, never hides from the ball, and can cover the pitch for 90 minutes. I just want that little bit more in the final third and then I think he’ll be a top top player and the 10-15 million folk or talking about will be doubled.
Maybe I’m greedy wanting more, but it’s cos I want him to fulfil that potential and I really hope this is his season to tidy up that little element of his game that frustrates me.
Or maybe I’m alone in thinking like that?

I think the one thing that is holding him back right now isn't actually his finishing, but his 90-10 bias to using his left foot. That makes him predictable and as a defender it's fairly easy to mitigate against him getting an early shot from the edge of the box. I'd be working on his right foot extra sessions until I see improvement, do that get him finishing with power from his right foot, and that poses a very different problem for defenders because it'll create more time and space on his left foot.

I think Tav gives the likes of Crooks/ Jones and even Howson more freedom, along with the rest of the team so I suppose this could explain why he doesn't score as much as some would expect.

As for assists, he'd need to get the same opportunities as the other midfielders, which he doesn't get as he makes sacrifices for the benefit of the team. But when he does get the opportunity to provide an assist, we need the strikers to be in the right place, and to put the ball in the net, which we've not had.

With more balance to the side and us attacking up the left more we should see a better return from Tav, largely due to having Giles with him. It will make us less lop sided.

Tav's best return on goals and assists was last year though, and especially since we had Wilder. In the last 20 games or so he had 4 assists and 4 goals, which is a decent return considering what else he is providing. In that same time he got as many goals as Crooks, and Crooks had no assists. Crooks was out of 5 of those games though due to suspensions, but avoiding suspensions is very important.

I can see him maybe getting 8-10 goals and 8-10 assists next year.

Just seen this in the Hartlepool Mail, I think it was published yesterday though, so I apologise if this has already been posted.

I'm not surprised, but I wouldn't sell, not even for £20m, I don't think we have much to gain by selling him now and would really struggle to replace him.

I expect this to be his big breakout year now he has a decent manager and someone half decent playing on the left of him, which will give the team more balance and let him attack more.

Whatever we can get for him now, we would likely get more for him next year, either way and probably little chance of getting less.

The only benefit I can see to selling, if we did get £20m is that it could add £10m into the striker pot, and then we would need to spend that remaining £10m on a midfielder and really hope it pays off, we couldn't really take much of a gamble on the latter, and would probably need someone proven or it could be pretty much season over.

I agree, as long as he is happy to stay then unless we got an offer we couldn't refuse then I see little benefit in selling him this season. But overall the media links from Prem clubs on some of our players should be taken as a positive sign as we are obviously doing something right for these players to be brought to the attention of the media and Prem clubs.

It's worth noting that many of his appearances have come under the management of monk, pulis and warnock. Some of the worst and defensive managers we've ever seen.

In the brutal world of football, if a forward player does not score or assist on a regular basis he is not doing what he is paid for. Tav fit that bill.
Tav is an all round player not just an attacking player. He scored 5 and assisted 5, but chances created was in the top 10 in the championship. He did his part, his team mates fluffed their lines.

In 101 starts he has scored 30 contributions, he he scores or assists every 3 and a bit games. I'd be surprised if in the last 5 years there is a single boro player to beat that, even CFs

If you see ALL his stats, not just the most absolute basic ones of which one isn't under his control entirely anyway (assists), then you are really not being honest n your analysis.

It's like claiming the economy is doing great because you have a stat that shows we have more people in employment than ever before, that's one stat, it isn't untrue, but it's only a fraction of the picture.

Stats, stats and lies.

You don't need stats to see how much a player contributes, you watch the game.

Clayton had the best passing stats, shouted on here often enough, you didn't have to watch long to realise why.

I'd sell Tav to a Premier League side if the price is right. We'll get him back 18 months later for a fraction if we're still in this division.

You need more than effort to make it in the top flight.
