Tav

Division is critical to determining the importance of the club, but other factors have relevance.

For a player I am sure the amount they are paid.

Geographically - where the club is - overseas players never seem to turn down a nice part of London. Newscastle has probably suffered from been 280 miles from London

The status of the club is relevant too- West Ham get big crowds ands are in London, but I doubt they have the quite ame the same appeal as say Chelsea.

A particular manager can make a difference - Terry Veneables was often popular with players.

The ambitions of the club - Wrexham probably could attract Division 1 players, because it is clear they want to get into the Championship if though they have just moved into Division 2.

Yes at the moment Bournemouth are bigger than us

If a player who was free agent was guaranteed first time football at the start of this season from both clubs, they would pick Bournemouth.
Not many sides of lesser historical stature than Bournemouth from the current crop in the Championship.

With that being said, Prem status means they're levels above any side from the league below when it comes to pulling power.

Tav moved there for PL football, and he's made the step up. Glad for him.

He went for peanuts ( 20 mil plus easy) and I say again side ways move at best.

We go up this season then let’s revisit this.
At the time of his transfer, he was stepping up into a bigger league, even if going to a side with smaller attendances, less history etc (though the weather is usually a bit nicer I suppose). He got a bigger wage and a decent contract because of it and as other posters have said, he knew if he put in his good performances he'd have another couple of seasons in the Prem at the end of it guaranteed whether Bournemouth stayed up or not, with yet more fat wages in a career that's always got a short lifespan comparatively. He had faith in himself and that faith has proven to be justified.

He's put himself in the shop window as a standout performer in a Prem side whether finishing in the bottom third of the table or not. He couldn't do that to anywhere near the same degree at us this season and I imagine the $hit atmosphere of the Wilder stink was already in full flow at the end of last campaign, hardly tempting him to stay.

Considering all that It's hardly a sideways step at best tbh. He's not just buying into the Muff, he's buying into the opportunity to showcase himself on a bigger stage this year.

I do however agree that he went for peanuts, especially considering his value to them this time around. Without him there's a good chance they'd be fooked this year (rock bottom or at the very best above perhaps only Saints by a solitary point or two right now) and looking like headed for the drop with an astronomical cost to go with it? Worth way more than he went for!

Just scored again. He's had a very good season at Bournemouth. Good on him.
Just as he was for us I get the impression he's an important player for them. I was always impressed by his defensive work as much as going forward.

With Tav playing Bournemouth's record reads Pld-23 W-9 D-5 L-9 Pts-32, while he was missing due to injury it reads Pld-10 W-1 D-1 L-8 Pts-4

I know this is a Tav thread, and good on the lad, he was always destined for better things. Regarding Bournemouth though, some credit has to be given to our other ex-player Gary O’Neil.
That lad was on a hiding to nothing when he took the caretaker role, and not many gave him a chance of keeping them up. I appreciate that not many Boro fans hold him in high esteem, but he has done a ruddy good job at keeping them in the big division.

Yeah Bournemouth is a massive club, their home attendance this season shows just how big the club are.

You can butter it up all day long, Bournemouth have done well to possibly stay in the premiership another season, but to say Bournemouth is a forward step with the size of the club and fan base is not correct, yes its premiership football, and better wages but we are a bigger club.

Good luck to Tav, but we no longer need him, as results, goals and attacking play have proved, not sure he would even get in our team when all are fit.

Going to Bournemouth is and was a forward step, not sure what relevance attendances has on the matter at all.

Nobody's going to judge Tavernier's football career on the size of the crowds he plays in front of.

A weirdly Sunderland way of looking at things.

Might as well promote Sunderland now then, if the size of the club and is fan base are what matters the most.

And of course he'd get in our team now, he's outstanding at a level up from where we are.

No Sunderland would have said step down and belittle bmuff. I said it was a largely sideways step as we could quite easily be above them this time next season.

A Sunderland way of looking at things, wow really?
Bournemouth is and always will be a small Southern club, that has been punching way above their weight, and fairplay to them.
The ground, the fan base is not a patch on the Riverside or Boro fan base, Ayresome Park was a bigger ground.
Tav moving was wage related only, it wasn't a step up, at best a sideways step, they will still be fighting relegation next year.

You are belittling them though.

He's moved to a better division, to a team that we've not finished above in 10 years.

In what way is it sideways?

They're staying up, he's been a big part of the reason for that

Even if we did get promoted next month, it's not been a sideways step because we're a Championship team now and he's been a Premier League player for a year.

I'm pretty sure Sunderland fans were saying the same things about McNair moving here when they were in League One, now I think about it.

they will still be fighting relegation next year.

No shame in that. Half the PL does that each and every season.

If, and it's a big if, we get promoted, we will be battling relegation too. We're surely not so arrogant as to expect a top half finish?

Even if Bournemouth got relegated, he'd still be in the PL. He's shown he can cut it there and would certainly be picked up by another PL side.

Well the fact they're southern is irrelevant to the discussion really, unless we're talking about the weather in which case they come out on top.

As for him being put off by the fact they have smaller attendances like it's the biggest determining factor, well Brentford have had smaller average attendances than Sheffield Wednesday this season. If you were looking to move on from a club this January just gone say and you had offers on the table from these two clubs, who would you likely choose?

And if your answer is the Owls then as far as setting yourself up for life goes then you'd be clueless.

My issue is they have some how been allowed to survive in the prem with a ludicrously small small ground and gates they would make Hartlepool blush and have not spent a penny improving it when other clubs have been told to spend millions on getting their ground prem ready.

Plus how the hell can they buy players for 50 mil on 9 k gates. ???

“Allowed to survive” 😂 yeah you’re right. If Everton finish bottom 3 they should be allowed to survive at the expense of Bournemouth.

It doesn’t matter they have a better team, they only get small crowds.

You sound quite bitter.
