Tav

I was initially sceptical about his move to Bournemouth thinking they would come straight back down. However it’s proved a great move for him. He’s been one of their most consistent and important players. No one else in the premier league wanted to take a punt on him and if he were to leave Bournemouth in the next few years, he will probably have a choice of mid level prem clubs and earn Bournemouth a decent transfer fee.

No brainer for him to go there after being our best player last season. Would love to see us back in for him if we get promoted but I imagine he would cost a pretty penny.

You think Bournemouth are bigger than us ???

If we go up we’ll finish above them next season.
Bigger? Again, all sounds a bit Mackem.

“If” we go up we “might” finish above them. No guarantees, and even if we do, at the time of the transfer Bournemouth were in the Premier League (a league they’ve been in a few seasons in recent years) and we were in the championship (a league we’ve been in 13 out of the last 14 seasons, one promotion and 2 play off campaigns only).

Even if we swapped places this season he has gained valuable experience and, if he did well, which he has, another Premier team would likely take him on. Plus he’s improved his game, made a fortune for himself and heightened his profile.

It was a step up, make no mistake. You can’t make your career choices on what might be’s or what has been’s. He could have stayed and we might not go up or he could have suffered poor form or an injury and missed his chance.

Just because we get more crowds and have a bigger stadium doesn’t mean we are in a better place. Just ask Sunderland who have been in league one for 5 years (actually don’t ask Sunderland, they will think crowds are the only measure of a club).

Yes at the moment Bournemouth are bigger than us

If a player who was free agent was guaranteed first time football at the start of this season from both clubs, they would pick Bournemouth.

He got to play at least a season in the PL knowing that good performances would likely see him stay there regardless of Bournemouth's fate.

Now he looks likely to get another year there without even changing clubs.

You can bang on about sideways moves and bigger clubs as much as you like, Tav - quite rightly - couldn't care less about that and did what was best for him and his career, and without doing anything (in my opinion) to give us reason to resent his choice. Take off the Boro goggles and stop being so parochial.

He went for peanuts ( 20 mil plus easy) and I say again side ways move at best.

We go up this season then let’s revisit this.

I just don't see how anybody could call it a sideways move with a straight face.

He moved to a higher division, for more money, and is having the best season of his career, whilst being integral to them likely staying up and re-establishing themselves in the Premier League.

Even if the best case scenario happens, and we're promoted, it still wasn't a sideways move as he's spent a full year playing top flight football.

Whether Bournemouth are historically a smaller club or not, they've still spent 6 of the last 8 years in the biggest league in the world, we've spent 1.

Tavernier's career is in a far better place now than it was when we sold him, he's impressed a global audience.

Good player. That said, I don’t know if we’d have done much better with him in our side this season, not sure quite how he’d have fit in.

His departure was a good move for all parties really, we got a decent fee and he got a decent move. Would love him to play for England.

Why? The opportunity arose at the beginning of the season, not the end. He had to make the decision considering the situation at the time. He can't risk delaying and missing out in the hope that Boro might get out of a tough league.

When Wilder left it looked an even better decision. You just don't know what's around the corner. What if he stayed and we don't go up or he gets a bad injury.

It's strange to consider it a sideway step at the time he made the decision considering he's competing in one of the top leagues in the world (and doing very well), improving as a player, improving his profile and earning more money.

Yup this is exactly what it is. Surprised attendances haven’t been posted yet.

If Luton went up and Akpom decided to leave for them I wouldn’t criticise him or call that a sideways move either. You’re going to the biggest, most watched league in the world, even if you get relegated at least you’ve shown what you can do on that stage. While you’re in the Championship there are always question marks, you never know when you’re going to get that opportunity again.

We’d probably still have wilder if he stayed

I think Sheffield Wednesday are bigger that Bournemouth, and bigger than us too. However, no one would suggest that signing for them was anything but a step down.
Division is all that matters. I never understand why "being a big club" matters or should matter.

Even if Bournemouth get relegated this season or next, Tav will still be in the PL. He's backed himself, made his mark and got attention. Someone further up the PL may look to snap him up anyway.
Whatever happens now, he's a step further forward in his career than he would have been if he stayed.
