Take the loan boys out the equation - who`s got to go in the rebuild?

'You don't improve a team by getting rid of people.'
Yes you do. Pretty much bourne out with much of the above

We have a great nucleus of a team but loads of deadwood we need to replace. £'s are key. Most importantly we need a goalie & striker(s) - NSS

I hope Gibson is prepared to spend many millions as the amount of players leaving mentioned on here and the fact we need more players if we are to improve he is going to have to.

Time to be brutal.
No sentiment.

Spence
Coulson
Wing
Howson
Saville
Assombalonga
Fletcher
Akpom
Stojanovic

Loanees [in - at the moment]

Bettinelli
Kebano [Keep if we can afford to]
Yannick [Keep if we can afford to]
Out of that lot Howson is worth another year but Im not sure he can play every game He was done for pace today which led to their goal
Im sad Coulson hasn't quite made it. But Johnson and Bola have probably been better.

Saville - well if a good offer came in Id take it - we cant let expensive buys run down their contracts

You dont need to "spend millions" = those days have gone.
You need a shrewd eye for talent, the contacts to bring talent to the club and the experience Manage and mould individuals into an effective fighting unit.
We have that - Neil Warnock.(y)

None of his shrewd eye for talent signings have set the place alight yet. Betinelli....poor, Akpom......poor, Bolasie.......obviously he has talent but we a have seen nothing major yet. Mendes probably same as Bolasie really not done anywhere near enough to earn a new contract. Kebano the pick of the lot for me. I like him but could we afford him. Hall who was already agreed when Neil came in so he has to go down as a Woodgate signing. Turned out he signed some canny players that Woodgate. Maybe the answer would have been bringing Warnock in along side Woodgate for a couple of years although I don't see him playing second fiddle.

EDIT: Forgot about Fisher. So far he looks like a decent signing. Morsy looks decent ATM fee ineffective games earlier on.

When I am talking about millions I am not talking about breaking the bank for players just the shear number that we will need to sign if the squad was thinned out as the earlier posts said.

What we have right now are bit-part players.

No one can go from a disjointed relegation - threatened side to a team with a Juno / Ravenelli / Emerson in a matter of less than a full season.
Of course we`ve seen nothing major yet.

We had players sucking the club dry on long term expensive contracts - had to be asked if they would stay on and help us: ultimately jettisoned and replaced by the kids and a few old pro`s. Shotton / Friend / Ayala / Gestede / Clayton - the "old guard" all disappeared at once. Friend had the decency to stay to the end.

Lets all have a bit of patience.

We should have just kept them all until end of season before sending them on their way.

Got plenty of patience r00fie after 55+ years of attending games you need to have its the sands of time that is running out for me. I am not bothered about the PL, although we need to get there for the finances, but to see some exciting football now and again would be fine. Thats not been the case for a long time. I'm probably wrong and missed something better but the last really exciting game I can remember was Luton away at the beginning of last season. Even then Britt spoilt the party with his penna miss. (y)Im a little behind you - over 40+ years of endurance [and agony]. I hope the excitement comes back next season - along with fans and the craic.

Its a huge shift of players in a era where no one has any money, NW has taken us to mid table with this lot by good management of a dubious crowd of players with not a decent CF at the club . Stick with the bloke as i trust him more than other managers in this league for every Akpom ...theres a Hall/Fisher , who looks solid enough at this level , biggest fear is we cash in on Fry/Tav who are sellable to finance deals .

you do make me laugh you Boro fans.

at least Steve Gibson looks safe on this thread from the cull....i'm not hearing the calls for him and his cheque book to vacate the owners seat that have surfaced over recent seasons from the football wizards and sages .

the club has just recorded its biggest ever financial losses & i read a post 2 weeks ago about 'binning off' (whatever that means) £25Million pounds of players, today i'm reading that we want to keep the 2 on-loan premiership players (and wages) whilst shuffling out the door, everyone else except McNair & Fry - you do know, cos many of you commented on it, Patrick and Dael are the only two NOT for sale, according to Neil - when clearly they are the only 2 who will bring some serious money through the front door.

dont let your heart rule your head and remember you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette. #UTB Forever.

Appraisal of Full Squad:

GK:
- Archer - I saw his handling for the U23s the other day, dear me. OUT
- Brynn - well thought of, not ready for number 1, LOAN OUT
- Stojanovic - better than Betenelli, but home sick OUT
DEF:
Dijksteel, Hall, Fry, Bola - FIRST XI
Wood, Fisher - SUBS/SQUAD
Spence, Coulson - SELL
MID:
Tav - FIRST XI
Morsy, Johnson, Browne, Howson, NML - SUBS/SQUAD
Wing, Saville - SELL
Folarin, Jones - LOAN OUT
FWD:
Fletcher, Watmore - SUBS/SQUAD
Walker, Colburn - LOAN OUT
Britt - OUT
Akpom - SELL

Leaves us after a first choice GK, 2 CM and 3 forwards.

I was thinking that its very rare that we pick up one of the stars that have run down their contract and we have picked up for free transfer. I can't think of one.
But I guess we are not the type of club thats ever going to do that. Remember Gibson in one of his rare interviews regarding Boksic and his 63K a week, stating that
Teesside has to pay well over the odds to attract the best players. In that we are stuck with it.

Was Boksic a free transfer ? - might have been

I think we might have a go at signing Ethridge - especially if Birmingham relegated. Well known by NW

Hadn't thought about that, but yes, can see that, NW has his favourites, people he trusts. Terrible season from Ethridge he's better than he has shown for Brum

I don't think people are reading this totally right - although we should expect very tight times indeed and also to be ever more beholden to Steve Gibson if people buy season cards in big, big numbers we are looking to strengthen but in a very sensible fashion. That is how I understand it.
Also, amazingly there will be other Championship clubs in even more dire situations.

I'd hope we extend Mendez-Laing's contract, bring in a new keeper (though Bettinelli has been largely fine for a good few games now), and bring in 2 new strikers.

Would like us to try and keep Kebano, but I'd be surprised, and I don't think there's much chance of Bolasie staying beyond this season.

Got to agree with most of that but I would still not bin Spence or Coulson yet. I know I will get shot down for this but both are young players so if they are not going to play a seasons long loan to see how they fare elsewhere before writing them off completely. Its a no lose situation for us.
Stojanovic never heard about being homesick I thought he moved so he got games to enhance his international career.
Walker is a worry he's not getting game time out on loan and doesn't look up to it but as with Spence and Coulson he is only young.
You have missed out McNair and I would put him back in defence. If not we need another CB probably need another regardless.
NML not done enough to want me keep him. They keep saying when he gets up to speed but the season is nearly over. Can't afford to gamble that he will come back after a close season in any better shape.
