Tactical change...

Carrick gets sacked and you are given the managers job today, what do you do differently to Carrick to get us into the playoffs?

Is it a tactical change? 3 CB's or an extra body in midfield maybe?

Do you stop the team playing out from the back?

Forgetting recruitment and the window, what do we need to do now to improve things on the pitch?

Surely doing the same thing isn't going to get us where we need to be, or is it a case of we don't have the players to play any other way?

It would be an extra man in midfield, but we don't have the players to do that as we didn't bring an extra midfielder in. Every time they got the ball last night they had a spare man in midfield and simply played around us.

Would Barlaser be ok though in a 3? His lack of physical attributes might be less of an issue if he's got two players alongside him?

It's not perfect but it might be better than the current system

The squad we have assembled for the rest of the season isn’t good enough to get in the playoffs imho…

3-3-1-3

Inverted wingbacks, split 8s a sweeping 6, overlapping false 9s flanked by split 10s

i'd also bring back Lukas Engel straight away

Playing out from the back - fine. Tìtting about until you lose it - stop please.
There's been games this season where it's become blatantly obvious it's no longer working and the opponent has sussed us yet we do nothing about it.
Second half last night, VDB and Edmondson just couldn't get us out. They couldn't even find a pass to a full back. Sunderland had us fully worked out and pushed right up with a full high press.

We just had to start hitting some channels and give the front 4 something to chase to at least try and push Sunderland back a bit and create a bit of space to play.

I don't necessarily think it's about formation, I think it's to do with coaching and organisation and how the coach wants us to play. He chooses to prioritise attack over defence.

Karanka had us more organised out of possession within a few matches of taking over, if the coaching will is there, it doesn't need a formation change.

I wouldn't change anything formation wise, we've got the players to play 4231, but I'd drop Edmundson straight away.

What I would do is hammer home on the training pitch about attitude and commitment regarding keeping the frigger out the back of our net.

I'd also spend the majority of our training analysing the goals we've conceded concluding they've come from basic errors generally overplaying in certain areas of the pitch when that option wasn't on.

I'm not saying abandon the playing out from the back, I'm saying in scenarios like the Preston game or the Cardiff at home, two very recent examples, our decision making was poor, and we could have easily gone long, turned the opposition around and re-set defended again 30/40/50 yards further up the pitch.

Don't think there's anything wrong with the formation or the players. We could set up more defensively with the same players and let the attackers win us the game instead of setting up in such an attacking way so the defenders lose us the game.

I would stop the passes for the sake of passes. Carricks most successful period was when we had Giles down the left and Jones down the right. We could stretch teams on either wing. Now we just try to tip tap our way through the middle of teams and hardly getting in behind them. Watching the mackems last night, the full backs just sat on the corner of the penalty area and we just kept on trying to pass through the middle.
And let the keeper & defenders go long if it is necessary

I think it’s too late
Sack the play offs this season - what’s the point

I’d be thinking about next season and questioning those around me.

That cosy world of Carrick’s brother and Woodgate doesn’t sit right with me

We are weaker now than at the start of the window. We've lost our best forward. Doak could be out for god knows how long. We've let Clarke go and bought Edmundson. We've signed another left back who can't defend. Ayling looks cooked. We didn't sign cover in midfield. We have signed a mish match of wingers/forwards with the expectation to fit in and secure a top six spot. Granted it was one match - but we looked a team of misfits. We couldn't string two passes together after Hackney scored. And out of possession we look more vulnerable because ELL has gone, Doak isn't in the team and Azaz is awful..... We struggle to keep possession which exposes the gaps in front and behind full backs..... And centre halves and midfield get pulled all over the place.

It's a bit shxt imo..... No optimism here at the minute :(

To answer the initial post we go 3-5-2 and back to basics. Good teams need the balance between defending and attack..... We haven't had that all season!

Next Tuesday I'd like to see:

Travers
van den Berg
Fry
Edmundson (there's literally nobody else)
Giles

Morris
Hackney
Barlaser (again, there's literally nobody else as we can't get Howson fit)

Whittaker
Conway
Iling Junior

The time has come to make ourselves difficult to beat and grind out some results.

We actually did this against Burnley and Hull, but have regressed since.

Surprised no one has suggested signing Akpom yet haha

There is only one answer to ensure promotion. Four, four, f-ing two.

If Howson was available I would drop Azaz and put Howson into CB and go 3 at the back.

I don't think going 3 at the back would really help us at the moment with VDB, Fry and Edmondson. None of them are comfortable really carrying the ball out of defence which is what we need. Howson did it really well at the end of last season. McNair has done it for us in the past as well. Lenihan also capable.

With what we have available, I'd keep the formation the same but I'd stop Ayling/Dijksteel from committing so far forward and basically play as a back 3 in possession. Where Giles bombs on but Ayling tucks in and makes a back 3.

I'd drop Azaz for Iheanacho and play him in the no10 with the remit that he drops back into the middle when we don't have possession to help the 2 CMs. But in possession plays higher.
