Tactical approach next season

I think Carrick and his coaching staff will try and implement a slightly different style next season, and try and move more towards the way City and Arsenal have played this season.

Having one of your full backs drift into midfield creates natural overloads in that area and is something that I think we will look to replicate. If Akpom is sold I also don't think he will be replaced. I think we would play a system that doesn't include a number 10. If we do this nailing the recruitment of wide players is key.

I'll probably be wrong with all this mind 🥴

Would need to sign a couple of fantastic full backs then.

We need to strengthen in that area anyways, but the inverted full back is a specialist position and one I very much doubt we'll be able to find the right player, at the right price.

Would be an interesting one if we did sign a player who could do what the OP suggests.

Not sure if he’s capable of doing it but the fact Brandon Williams will be available from Man U and Carrick knows him he could potentially be a shout.

He’s a right footed left back too so slotting into midfield when we’re on the ball may suit him. It’s a tough gig though and you have to be very clever to play the role.

I actually think they tweaked the system towards the end of the season to make us more defensively sound and it back-fired. It made sense to do it, especially if we had been promoted, but a mix of injuries and slight loss of form among our forwards combined badly with it. It was still narrow margins. In the first match against Coventry we were overwhelming them and if one of the chances had gone in, I think we would have gone on to win. When that didn't happen, you could see us start to conserve a draw rather than pressing to win.

The style we play is actually very demanding and I think, if anything, they will be looking to make it simpler. The key is not so much tactical innovation as it is getting the players so familiar with how we play that they can perform it better. In particular, not so much "plan B" as familiarity with what to do when a team presses high, sits back, does the hockey-pokey etc.

We have only had half a season and it takes time to make this kind of style second nature.

We weren't brilliant defensively but we werent terrible either. We were brilliant going forward though and just from a fan perspective it was so good to watch, Id be gutted to see that change

There was a definite change as the season went on if you look at giles he had loads of assists but then he seem to stop going to the byline and his crosses and assits dried up as did our form. In hindsight i think we paid to far too much respect to coventrys skills on the counter and should have just gone for it in the first game.

Do you know what I wouldn't be surprised to see? McNair at right back as the one drifting into midfield
Please god no, full back is a specialist position and he is god awful there. In fact if mcnair is still at the club it will be as a utility player from the bench. If hes a starter thats our promotion hopes in the bin.

I feel like we did try that at times especially around January/February, Smith was often drifting inside closer to where Howson would normally be.

I suspect they'll be happy to sacrifice 5% of our attacking powers for a 10% defensive improvement.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us get a new CB, a big beast of a defender, and a specialist CDM who can sit a little more and protect the counter. We need the new George Boateng. Someone that out of possession is in your face, covers a ton of ground, plays 40+ games a season and is a metronome on the ball with 95% simple passing.

I agree with this, which is why I think we will change the way we play slightly. We need to get a midfielder who will give Hackney the security of getting on the ball and influencing the game. I always got the feeling he was desperate to get forward more than he did, but for whatever reason constantly checked himself.

Preferably 6ft plus

That suggestion costs a lot more than 5% of our 'attacking powers'.

Unless you want a prime Kante, who last I checked... Isn't on our radar.

At our level you either have a Howson and Hackney who both got stuck in defensively but ultimately are there to create or you have a let's say for arguments sake a 'decent' version of whatever Morsy would be.

It means we would totally change how we played (up until say mid April), slow everything down and create far less chances. Worked well in the playoffs....

Maybe, maybe not. I guess my point is we had a soft underbelly. The biggest indicator of this is that we lost too many away games last season to be truly challenging. We lost 12 away games, way more than our direct competition. We have to find a way of being more resilient.

To put it in perspective only 4 other teams lost more away games than us and 2 were relegated....which means Wigan, who came bottom, lost less away games than us.

We have to improve our defending, we have to be able to withstand pressure particularly away from home, when teams are lobbing balls in and pinning us back. we need someone alongside Lenihan that can put the body on the line, bully attacking players, and clear everything. We also need that shield in front, someone that can work at denying the space for dangerous balls forward.

They don't have to be a prime Kante, they have to be a championship Kante.

Players like Ben Sheaf, Lewis Travis, Ben Whiteman, Marvelous Nakamba. These kind of players would have given us legs, resilience, options on how we play, and can still play a bit with the ball
