Sycamore Gap Trial Begins

A case like this always asks questions about the validity and effectiveness of our judicial system. In truth, our prison system has never worked in terms of rehabilitating offenders - all it does is harden people. Yet even I - a bleeding heart in terms of stuff like this - feel the need for some kind of revenge. A stupid, moronic, mean-minded crime. But let's face it, these f***ing idiots will learn nowt from jail. I don't know what the answer is, but as a nation we need to properly, dispassionately look again at crime and punishment.

I still wonder about the motivation for their action. I don't think they've actually given one.

The prosecution suggested it was "for a laugh", which I understand to be a kind of practical trolling: doing something petty and mean-spirited, then watching everyone freak out about it. This is the kind of behaviour we see online all the time, isn't it? People just doing it for the reaction.

Well, they got a reaction, and people did freak out. Whatever the sentence, they can't walk away from this think it was worth it, or with the possibility of anyone else thinking it was worth it. I do think we live in an age of petty spite where people will do things "just to pi$$ someone else off", and we don't want a wave of copycat attacks on public landmarks and beauty spots from others who think this is just a laugh.

Whether a custodial sentence is needed to do this, I am not sure.

You could be the answer to the trial by jury conundrum.
We don’t need them and we could clear the backlog within weeks.

Just have you sit at home, read the papers and send in the result to the judge within a couple of mins.

Indeed! I've been saying this for ages, but for some reason nobody will listen.

10 years without parole would be ideal for the morons. Especially after going not guilty and messing around with a trial. Then have them repairing Hadrians wall in the winter & planting trees as part of their community service on release.

Anyone saying "it's only a tree" if someone destroyed something of significance to you. Think about someone else saying to you "It's only...".

This.

Also, I believe, expressed as "owning the libtards"

It's the same mentality as puts an X against Reform/UKIP or follows "influencers" like the the Tates. Because it's freedom of speech innit? Winding people up is a goal in and of itself. Well these two will redefine FAFO. Don't be too surprised if they come up with tear filled confessions before they are up for sentencing. I'm not sure putting them in chokey will make any difference to their mindset or that they will learn anything but it might just stop some other plonker who thinks that their actions don't have consequences.

Also with regard to arguments about other "more serious" offences. Each offence needs to be looked at in its own right and be unrelated to any other crime. Its perfectly valid (IMO) to say various crimes are not given harsh enough sentencing and in many cases that's probably right, but we should be arguing for the sentencing of those crimes to be looked at and reviewed. We shouldn't be calling for lower sentencing for crimes just because we feel there are some crimes that don't currently get punished as sufficiently.
Better build about fifty new prisons then.

What makes it worse is their denial of being involved and still having no remorse, they sound like absolute imbeciles and it looks as though it's not the first time they've done it and also by the looks of it they've hidden evidence. Punishment should be engage them in some sort of educational program every weekend for the next year (like speed awareness) and then make them do community service every weekend for the rest of their lives to 'lefty' projects as it seems from their messages that's who they were trying to offend.

That would be utterly ludicrous. The context of having worked in the courts for many years informs my knowledge. I have seen people get less for horrendous sex offences.
It has nothing to do with a sex offense though and to compare the two is ludicrous.

What they did was moronic and they deserve to be removed from society for being a couple of morons

How much of a danger to society are these two idiots?

They may have upset a few with their stupidity but are we, as a society, more interested in punishing rather than protecting, or is this only certain sections of society?

If people who were moronic ( what ever that means ) deserve to be removed from society...

You'd need 10x the prisons ., but that'd take 20 years to build .

Right or wrong , currently, today....
Theres no room to jail every one
