Support for Scottish Independence hits 58%

It was marketed as a once in a generation vote............. i think 'once in a generation' is around 20-25 years

Millennials are regarded as a generation and thats from 1980 to late 90s/2000s

So 2014 + 20 years = 2034

Don't take my word for it though....

Salmond: 'Referendum is once in a generation opportunity'

SNP leader Alex Salmond has said the Scottish referendum is a "once in a generation opportunity".

Speaking to Andrew Marr he said that a simple majority, however close, would be accepted by both sides in the campaign and there would be a "generational" gap before another independence referendum.

"Once in a generation" has no definition. A phone generation is 1 year. A union of countries generation is as long as part of the Union wanting to dramatically change the economic world of another part of the Union - 2 years.

OK, like I said, I want them gone anyway and English Independence, so fingers crossed a generation is regarded as a couple of weeks - they will be gone before Christmas (y)(y)(y)

Although I was on the fence in 2014, I now believe they would become a successful independent nation, with a modern democracy, unlike the our dark ages version of democracy.

Go to the bog in any factory or large warehouse, you will see the split on the walls. Why people on here think it's a country of milk and honey is beyond me.

Me I don't care one way or the other , but if they decide to go;

£500 customs charge into England.
£100 on Scotch Whisky.
Iron bru, tax free, anyone who wants to drink that sugary crap good luck to them
Repay the national debt based on the Barnett formula.
£1000 road fee for all Scottish registered cars and lorries.
Sterling for no more than 6 months.
They can charge us the same if we go into Scotland, I won't be.
Good luck to them

I think it depends on circumstance, you were talking about a comment back in 2014. This was long before England forced Scotland out of the EU, and then even longer before it was decided (by Tories) that we should leave and $hitting on 50% of the UK's trade.

More monumental changes have happened in those 6 years (that are worse for Scotland and the UK) than would typically happen in a generation.

People change their minds, based on circumstance, it's allowed, it's democratic.

Just out of interest, what region of England do you live in? (assuming you live in England)
Would you support regional independence?

Do you also want Northern Ireland and Wales gone too?

I know what I meant, but carry on.

You seem to be judgement based on a message board.

I am the poorest judgement of character I know, its always nice to hear the views of an expert.

Sounds like England will become a third world country along the lines of India 30 years ago. India have progressed (a little).

They would vote leave in a jiffy.
No Tory Govt will give them another vote in the near future.
If I was a Scot I'd want out.

It's weird reading this thread that some folk seem to have a really bitter animosity towards Scotland, and yet they also seem to be resentful to the idea of Scottish Independence.

You'd have thought either they'd have the bitterness and therefore want Scotland to go their own way, or if they wanted Scotland to remain in the UK so much it'd be because they like them.

Teesside - Unsure of regional independence... as in North East, North West, Midlands, etc

Yeah If Northern Ireland and Wales want to go, that's OK with me - I understand older generations may have more attachment to NI in particular because of the troubles, but I was born in the late 80s, so I feel as related to NI as I do to Hungary or Poland

I'd seek help if I was you. It seems as though you have a lot of pent up anger and resentment.

What if London wanted independence, or the South from the North, you know, as we're a net drain to them, would that be ok? What does a country border mean, ours have changed hundreds of times and the vast majority of that wasn't as England, Great Britain or the UK.

It's strange, normally the reason most people that seem to want to cut off Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland etc, is because they have some sort of false attachment to England's recent history, like a superiority complex, like they think it was in the 1800's. They think that because we used to be some sort of superpower that we have some sort of right to be one now. We don't have that right, we were never going to retain it and we would always have a much lesser capability if we were smaller or on our own. It's like they liked us being all high and mighty, but seem to use it as a reason to break it all up and become insignificant.

Yeah, I don't hate Scotland or anything - just sick of the constant blame towards everything England and the Anti-English resentment... so yeah I feel Scotland, Wales and NI have it a lot better than most of the English

The subject is full of oxymorons. The Scots want to be free of the English but are desperate to stay in the EU. I've never got that. I can understand them feeling disenfranchised, now more than ever, but to them be happy to be to be partly governed by people even less close (in many ways) strikes me as odd.
