Sunderland away

I'm thinking of taking grandson to Sunderland on the train which is the best station to get off and how safe is it walking to stadium cheers

Northumbria police are ***** to Boro fans, they are the reason I stopped going on supporters coaches in the mid 80's, and from what I have seen they are no better now, I wouldn't put my or my loved ones safety in a big bunch of louts hands longer than necessary. I would still travel by train ( if there is any) I wouldn't wear colours or keep them well covered and just keep my head down before and after the match.
This isn't a rant about police in general just my experience with Northumbria.

I'm taking my 14 year old to his first Mackem away game. I've avoided it until now but he gave me the death stare when I suggested not going to this one.

I normally get the train to Newcastle (from York) and the Metro to the ground. Not an option this time and I'm glad. It means having to walk round all the annoyed Mackems who even with no colours still loo like they want to bray my head in - probably for not having red and white stripes tattoo on my face.

So I'm going for the coach this time. Least worst option. Parking and walking is pot luck on whether someone spots you don't have a Mackem accent - I don't have a Teesside accent either but that doesn't matter to them.

Just be aware if you travel by train you could be jammed in a carriage full of lads on the beer and other stimulants, creating noise and not too concerned about who else is there.
Depending on the age of your grandson this could be a bit traumatic if he is not normally exposed to such high Jinx.
As above, go by official coach (alcohol free).

They changed tactics in the last season and went much lower profile, no shields, no dogs, no kettling.
We hope there is going to be a meeting between Mbro fans and their police after Xmas.
But what we do know so far is this season there have been delays entering due to only 2 turnstiles and also because they are confiscating all coins.

I do wonder about some people on this board sometimes!

Follow the simple rule of keeping away from idiots as much as possible, that I'm sure you'd do anyway in "normal" life and you will be fine. Newcastle and then Sunderland Central no problem.

That’s normally impossible on a train full of them

You would be far better driving and just blending into the crowd or getting the club bus if taking a child. The place is full of idiots and the police don’t make things much better either

I try my best. Train to Newcastle is off this season as there are none from York.
