Sunak's windfall tax and grants

Because some will just drink it. Some will buy a few bits of stone island snide and some will gamble it away.
I'd also like to see it come straight off the bills.
Everyones bill will be over £650 so in the almost impossible event that it will free any other money up they can waste that.......... at least the money will go a little bit towards their energy needs.
Careful, you might fall off your high horse….

Nobody is getting £400. We're getting an increase of £800 (on average) due to the price cap and they're essentially just reducing the price cap by £400 for one year.

I'm a relatively high earner but my bills are going to be £350-£400 where they were about £150 last year. The £400 pays for 2 months of increase. I still have to find an extra £2k for the other 10. That's on top of all of the other cost increases. Just because I'm not poor it doesn't mean it's not difficult.

That is one of the most lazy stereotypes that I have read recently. The smear that you repeat is one driven by right wing press when the Tory party was trying to slash benefits and turn people against claimants.

There is always the odd one or two that abuse the system but that is no reason not to help the majority with cash payments.

There is more tax dodgers that benefit claimants - maybe we should just have our salaries paid to the energy companies to make sure we can't spend our money on drink?

One or two well I must see a different boro than you as I see loads more than one or two also I see a lot of people who want to take no responsibility for them selfs or their actions

Why?

The £400 is specifically for energy and is going straight off bills.
You've just answered your own question.

There's no chance 100% of those who receive the £400 will put it towards their energy bill.

No doubt the majority will. But there'll be a fair number that will spend the £400 unwisely. Drink? Gambling? Drugs? etc.

Without doubt the £400 should've been credited on your energy bill, as that is exactly what it's there for.

Slightly of topic but as someone who has had two periods of unemployment in my life, so far at least, I fail to understand how people think it is an easy way to live. In both periods my life was difficult, be that having enough money for food or energy and no way could I have afforded drugs or drink. However, forgetting your troubles by getting smashed, for a few hours at least, must be very tempting. It does seem on here that there are some individuals that like to prejudge the poor but they also seem to forget that life can kick you where it hurts sometimes, and not everyone is able to bounce back so easily or have other resources to turn to when the sh#t hits the fan. So how about a bit of compassion for our fellow man because ‘ there but for the grace of God go I’.

I agree it is a disgrace what has happened at number 10 and heads should roll. Tho this is not about them is it. I am a strong believer in a voucher system for those unemployed for 2 years plus if you have no disability stopping you from working. I also agree on a cap on family benefits after two kids. I also agree the tax system is unfair and those with the most should be made to pay their fair share of tax and new laws stopping them from avoiding their tax obligations. If that makes me a Tory yes I am one. I believe in a society where we all contribute and work to make it a better place sorry for the rant

we use heating oil which we buy from various independent suppliers depending who is cheapest, not sure how it will work for us maybe get a voucher or something or do we only claim it off the electric bill who knows

My sample size is much bigger. Over 20 years I've dealt with hundreds of thousands of people. Also what you see on the outside is different to what is actually going on.

People might not have the skills, education or support to take responsibility for themselves. Outwardly they may look normal but would have all sorts of issues you are unaware of.

Think of yourself as lucky that you are alright... I wouldn't imagine for one minute that you would swap places with the 'loads' of people living the good life on benefits.

Based on what evidence?

It has been shown when you give poor people more money through the benefit system they actually waste LESS money as it improves their mental health and sense of worth. You'd be surprised.

But the counter argument is if your bill is £400 less now you could just spend £400 of the money you were going to pay on energy on drink, gambling and drugs. It's all in the same pot.

Giving people the option to spend the money on what is needed rather than dictating helps people manage their finances. That is one of the primary reasons Universal Credit pays money for rent to the claimant, not the landlord.

What I see at work is families with both parents working every hour they can to support their kids losing their homes thanks to Universal Credit.

I see pensioners unable to afford to heat their homes.

I see adults who are homeless unable to get any help to find temporary accommodation.

I see mums unable to feed their children.

I get 20 emails a day now from people desperately needing help.

I get at least 5 emails a week from people who are saying they feel like killing themselves due to it all.

But you can sit behind your computer making lazy remarks about the poor on a public message board all you want... as long as you post support to a fellow poster going through a hard time or chuck a couple of tins in the food bank collection at the CoOp you are dong your bit eh?

Want to do more? Stop repeating the lies spouted by the media about the poor, read up on what happens when you give people in poverty extra money and maybe think that there will be people who read these posts who are on their arses thanks to austerity / covid / cost of living and you probably aren't helping their mental states bleating on that we can't give them cash as they will spend it on drugs. They might want to use that money for something more pressing like food or high interest debts.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I get really annoyed with people slagging off the poor.

If your boiler is broken you get a plumber out and believe what they say because they are experts and you don't know (or aren't qualified) to root around in there to fix it.

But when a benefits expert with 20 years experience tells you something about the system and the people who claim they are ignored. Why? It's easier to believe the propaganda and feel better about yourself that you are doing well and this lot are wasters.

That's all very well. But you'll also be aware that a Tory government tends to take all the support network away that enables those less well off to contribute (education, training, self worth etc).
How would say for example capping benefits on families with more than 2 kids allow those kids to go on to live stable lives?

I'm not sure what you do exactly but my wife works with many of the types of people you mention. Depite her telling stories to family members of what tragic situations people have found themselves in they're still happy to just repeat the stereotypes re-enforced by the daily mail. It's just engrained, a total lack of appreciation of just how different some people's world's are.

It's crazy and so blinkered. But then again we've had meany years of these stereotypes being pushed by Government and media - plus people don't like to think they are losing out when others are getting something (seemingly) for nothing - I imagine that drives it too.

I find it all quite sad. There is little compassion in England for others.
