Sunak - "more important to fight the scientists than to fight covid"

The lessons learned from this inquiry so far is that certain people should be in jail.
My take-out from it all is that those at the very top of our government where callous, had no regard for protecting the lives of the population, were inept, arrogant and only looking out for themselves & their mates.

But we all knew that anyway didn't we?

I'll add - how anyone can defend/vote for this lot after all this is beyond my comprehension.

The first lockdown was understandable as there was little knowledge. By the time of the following winter we knew it was mainly those with underlying issues who were at serious risk. Should the whole country have stopped again on that basis? Would people have been in favour of lockdowns if furlough hadn't existed? What about those of us who never got any financial support but were denied the opportunity to work when absolutely willing to do so?

Any Country that can elect an expensively Educated Buffoon such as Doris Johnson to run it deserves all it gets.
If he had been educated at a State School he would have been the Richard Head of the "B" Class.
He makes Donald Trump look like a good Politician.

From a report of yesterday's enquiry... quite remarkable.

Under questioning by Andrew O’Connor KC, counsel to the inquiry, Sir Patrick said: “I think I’m right in saying that the prime minister gave up science at 15.

“I think he’d be the first to admit it wasn’t his forte and that he struggled with the concepts and we did need to repeat them. Often.”

Steady on.

I wouldn’t entirely take that view. The first lockdown was understandable in view of the profound uncertainty, but with hindsight a bit pointless. The fact that we are talking at all about eat out to help out is a reminder that the original wild-type Covid essentially burnt it self out by the summer as Valance himself always said it would, to the point it needed a helping hand to get going again in the autumn.

By contrast, I would argue that the second lockdown, with the more difficult variants we had in 2021 to deal with, and with the vaccine program being rolled out, almost certainly did save many lives. Enough for the economic harm it did is a more difficult question that I feel can probably not be answered until at least a generation has passed and taken the politics and emotion out of it. But my political and emotive gut feel would still be yes.

I also think Whitty’s evidence made an interesting counterbalance today. They both reinforced my view of them at the time, which was probably appropriate for their respective jobs. Whitty always had a more holistic view, because, as the medical officer, he was the one who also had to take account of the health effects of economic deprivation. I always thought he was well worth a listen as a result and probably the most realistic of the scientists at the time in appreciating how difficult the balance was.

But unfortunately it does seem as though his more nuanced approach gave politicians who were looking for a “let them die” get out a handle to catch hold of. This doesn’t make him wrong it makes them wrong.

The inquiry is staggering. It’s almost as if government didn’t have a Risk Register and a pandemic wasn’t on there.

It shows how utterly incompetent government has been since Brexit. That ridiculous event took up so much time, the normal role of government slipped. Johnson, Sunak and the rest all want hanging out to dry.
