Storytellers in Stockton closed.

Actually, was it even still jimmy from ku running it? That post says we've loved our 3 and a half years but it opened ages ago didn't it?

It’s no coincidence that folks on the autistic spectrum are on the rise.. technology is having a disastrous effect on our minds and social capabilities.
I don't think I've read such a bull **** statement in my whole life, autism isn't something you get, and everyones different, we just recognise it more. My partner is the most sociable person I know and she's could party just as hard as me, you would never guess she's neurodivrse. The days of the **** head are on the decline because young people don't have the same obsession that I did in my youth.

Last time I was in when I went to Stockton for a gig I said to my friend I can see this place closing. Most of the fridges were half empty. Drafts removed that they used to sell. The guy behind the bar said it only opened a couple of nights a week.

Sad when you see the dumps that remain viable. Good bar, great little venue as well.

It’s sad that places need to sell food to stay open.. the good old fashioned watering holes of old are dying out.

Great venue. The decline in live performances is alarming. Young musicians holding Spotify in higher regard than performing live.. young ‘comedians’
chasing tictok likes with pranks and self segregation.

‘Socialising’ has actually become a hobby that employers can look favourably upon.. rather than it just being a byword for alcoholism! Tweet and like and share.. to nobody without any social skills.

It’s no coincidence that folks on the autistic spectrum are on the rise.. technology is having a disastrous effect on our minds and social capabilities.

Don’t usually get involved in discussions / arguments on this board (unless it’s about music seeing as I run a local music and arts fanzine).

But as someone who works in the mental health and care sector, can I just point out how ignorant and offensive that above comment is to millions of people.

Possibly the strangest comment I’ve ever seen on this board.
Dopamine Attention Variability Executive Dysfunction which is commonly known as ADHD is a result of low dopamine levels.. burnt out dopamine receptors.. in some cases the body struggles to make dopamine through caffeine overloads
and poor gut health.

Social Media likes, find and shares play into our bodies reward system.. where before completing a task would create this.. now a like or swipe will have the same responses. We have had a huge increase in the popularity or caffeinated drinks in recent years.. put these two together and then you start seeing what we are seeing today. Add into that these false digital communities we find ourselves living through times that by the avoidant tendencies that are brought about by low dopamine levels and there you have it.

Society has changed and it’s being changed. No tin foil hat required it’s there to be seen plain as day.

I’m sorry if I have caused offence to folks waiting to jump onto a good old fashioned internet pile on with desperate constructions of ignorant ableism.. barking up the wrong tree innit.

I have ADHD, I know all about it. Autism isn’t developed, you’re born with it.

I’m not sure what kind of mental gymnastics went on that you managed to bridge a pub closing to autism levels rising.

Not a pop, just trying to understand.

I missed this before I posted.

As someone who works in the mental health and the care sector you should be aware of some of the issues that I’ve mentioned.

as for offending millions of people.. it isn’t and it doesn’t.

As I said above, I don’t tend to get involved in the conversations on the forum as it’s very easy to get dragged into arguments with trolls or the misinformed.

Anyway, I’ve made my point. You can take it on board or not.

Anyway, I came on to comment about Storeytellers closing.

Yeah it’s a big shame. It wasn’t a venue I often frequented but was certainly a key part of the local music scene. I did see some great acts in there over the years too… (Stockton Calling if I remember).

Hopefully something else will pop up in its place.

I dont often call someone a pr*ck, but you come across as an offencive pr*ck. Sorry if I've offended you, but calling you a pr*ck isn't an offence comment, is it?

Times are changing since the smoking ban more pubs have had to offer more than wet trade.

Times are changing new artists hold digital platforms in high regard. They would rather have their performance seen or heard by faceless numbers than have the cost of performing to limited numbers in person.

‘Socialising’ has actually become a hobby that employers can look favourably upon.. rather than it just being a byword for alcoholism! Tweet and like and share.. to nobody without any social skills.
Times are changing social interactions and much more common without physical interaction taking place.. sometimes without a social interaction taking place.

It’s no coincidence that folks on the autistic spectrum are on the rise.. technology is having a disastrous effect on our minds and social capabilities.

Times are changing..’THE AUTISTIC SPECTRUM’ which includes a whole range of different traits which can make the way in which people interact with the world more difficult depending on which traits are more prevalent and to what extent they present themselves.

Modern society makes it harder for certain groups on the spectrum, certain traits are exaggerated and indeed SOME could even be a result of the modern lifestyle and changes in societal structures.

as much as the trigger fingered, banner waving, do good, be kind brigade would love for it to be the case.. I am not saying Autism has caused a pub to close.. therefore offending millions.

Right, I’m with you.

Autism is understood as a neurodevelopmental condition present from birth.

Yes, some traits (like sensory sensitivity, social withdrawal, or anxiety) might become more pronounced due to environmental factors. Increased screen time, reduced face-to-face interactions, and overstimulation in certain settings might amplify difficulties for those predisposed to sensory or social challenges.

However, autism itself is not as a result of modern society.

If you’re suggesting that certain traits are exacerbated by modern society, we’re in agreement.

I think the rise in autism diagnoses are more likely caused by a better understanding of what it is. I didn’t get diagnosed with ADHD until late last year, I’m 36 now. In school I was just ‘unmanageable’.

There are many causes of autism. Research suggests that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) develops from a combination of:
  • Genetic influences and
  • Environmental influences, including social determinants
These factors appear to increase the risk of autism and shape the type of autism that a child will develop. However, it’s important to keep in mind that increased risk is not the same as a cause. For example, some gene changes associated with autism can also be found in people who don’t have the disorder. Similarly, not everyone exposed to an environmental risk factor for autism will develop the disorder. In fact, most will not.

Polarized thinking patterns or 'Black and white' thinking is super common for people with ADHD and other neurodivergent thinkers.. 'autism is not a result of modern society' it's a very clear cut statement. But in truth it is not completely true. Now I'm not saying that ALL elements of the autistic spectrum are 100% caused by modern society.. but some are. Some elements are exacerbated, some are caused by.. but most are not. 60% to 90% are genetic.. but just as we are seeing improvements in diagnosis as to we are seeing a greater understanding of the underlying causes and risk factors.. to SOME areas of Autism on the Spectrum.

Yes but no.. nuanced.. tricky to say the least.

In conclusion your honour.. it is disappointing that Storytellers is closing down.. getting the right mix of wet and dry trade, opening hours, entertainment, etc etc etc tough, very tough. costs are going up and less people are going out in the same way they once did. To stick is to fail, Jimmy is a bright fella and could obviously see the benefit of expanding on what he had in the centre of town. Storytellers competes with the ARC for entertainment, with NE Volume for live music (which is struggling itself) the multiple micro bars that have popped up and of course Jimmy's latest venture that was a sure fire hit.
