Stop playing Giles as a left back

He isn't a good defender

He let the ball bounce in the box yesterday, a cardinal sin in football for a defender for Prestons equilizer

He has limited defensive attributes

There is not a snowballs chance in hell he is a better defender than Bola, none

Is there a single poster in this forum who think playing him at left back is a better option than Bola?

He is an excellent crosser of the ball, but has limited ability as a winger who can beat a man down the outside unless he has a clear run wth space

Use him in a 4-4-2 as an orthodox lft sided midfielder in the same way Beckham used to play with Bola behind him

Seems to be the consensus of opinion.

He's a dreadful LB and not an out and out winger. Probably suited to the LH role in a 4-2-3-1 where his defensive duties are tracking back and that's about it.

Bola LB, Dijksteel RB. Think that would definitely shore the back 4 up. A bit.

TBF yesterday both goals were from set pieces where he would have been back defending anyway, and the first goal he was left with 3 Preston players on his own.

I don't think Giles' defending was the problem, it was that he couldn't get forward enough from the position he was being asked to play so was often too far back when needed.

Giles is good at one thing - and that's not defending. He can't tackle a hot dinner. It should be obvious by now what his strength(s) are to anyone who has watched him this season. That's a coaching decision and hopefully Carrick will sort it. He needs a decent LB behind him and to be stationed left midfield. Clearly that's Bola. Dijksteel should be back in too at RB. Offers much more going forward than Smith. It would help if Jones fell down less and completed some crosses.

I think he's best suited ad a wing back, unfortunately.

Mogga found his best position difficult to pin down last season, leading to his loan ending at Xmas and him going to Cardiff.

He even tried him as a right sided attacker I think, letting him cut in on his strong foot, but that didn't work either.

I agree that left midfield is probably the best bet, with Bola behind him.

Wouldn't like to see him at left midfield. Either play him at left back or don't play him. A lot of our best play came from him and mcgree on the left hand side.

I find it baffling how a player in the modern game can make it as a professional at a Premier League club as a pure specialist in a niche position that has only come back into fashion in the last few years. He is so clearly not a full back and looks totally lost playing there. He is also not a winger, and the reasons why have been alluded to above. If we are playing full backs, which appears to be the case going forward, why play him?

I said 2 months ago to move him up the pitch abd play Bola or Clarke at left back.

Giles looks more like a winger and has since day 1.

Great as a wing back, terrible as a left back, he needs to be playing much farther up the pitch where his running and crossing can affect the game more

Carrick played with many great left backs during his career, you'd like to think he'd be able to spot that Giles isn't a left back.

Hopefully it's Bola in tomorrow night and Giles is pushed further up, ideally in a 4231.

Steffen, Bola, Lenihan, Fry, Dijksteel, Howson, Hackney, Giles, McGree, Jones, Akpom.

Ironops - wing back have to defend around 50% of the time. I would play him left wide midfield with a left back behind him.

He made a great early impression with his excellent crossing at the start of the season and people were asking why Wolves weren't having him around their squad but as the season has progressed it is obvious why. He's a one-trick pony, albeit a very good trick, but his defending is woeful. He's like a championship version of Trent Alexander-Armstrong but we don't have Van Dijk, Fabinho etc to cover his defensive frailties and we don't have Mane, Salah etc to score enough goals that the odd goal doesn't matter.

I mentioned on the other thread I think carrick might be guilty of over estimating some of the players strengths ass at Man U he will have had players that would bat an eyelid at carrying out both roles.

It’s about finding a balance.
