Went to a live performance of Brassed Off (the Grimethorpe Colliery band provided the soundtrack to the film whilst it played), at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year. There was a question and answer thing before hand and ST was part of that and seemed a decent genuine bloke, although one that looks pretty rough around the edges now.

He grew his hair long over the past couple of years so he'd look authentically rough for the role of Frank in Educating Rita. Looks like it worked!
