Steffen: Keep or Dump?

If we can't get Steffan for £25k/week - I might have a go for Randolph - third choice at West Ham. I thought Randolph was a bit better than Steffan.
He signed for Bournemouth in January.

So he’s now been promoted to second choice there!

Paper talk on Sky News this morning is suggesting that German clubs are chomping at the bit to sign him. Doesn’t mention which clubs mind you. Also mentions a premier league move for Chuba for £15m. Again, no named club(s). Lazy speculation or no smoke without fire?

It's Crystal Palace that has been linked with Akpom this season.

I would imagine that Palace would have to shed a few striker’s first before Chuba would consider that move. Unless of course they play him in his new found role as a ten. They have some decent young and hungry players there, so he might be down the pecking order a bit. Only my humble opinion of course.

"Manchester City are ready to sell USA international goalkeeper Zack Steffen after his stunning season out on loan at Middlesbrough with Bundesliga clubs lining up and ready to make their move."

Thats how The Sun have reported Steffens loan today. A bit OTT ('Stunning')

However if a deal can be done, that doesnt break the bank, then I would keep. I liked him, especially the last few months.

They're expecting Zaha to leave, so there's one out the door.

Hopefully nothing in it as they tend to sign younger players.

Palace haven't even got a manager for next season, so if he is to be a "club" signing..... generally work out well don't they.....🙄🙄

Lazy paper talk imo

If Chuba doesn't want to be here, thinks the grass is greener - good luck.

As for Steffen, hope we can get him. But again if he gets a better offer.....again, good luck.

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

West Hams achilles heel this year has been a lack of goals. I can see that being a good fit for Chuba 😕

Steve Pears was excellent from 1983 to 1988 - eventually didn't he get an England B cap, like Mogga.
He got a call up to full England team but dropped out through injury. Yes he was brilliant at that lower league level but when he stepped up to the top flight he was way out of his depth.

This shouldn't even be a question.

If he wants to come here - then it's an automatic yes.

The way we play, he's excellent. A lot of the build up starts from him and his range of passing and choice of passing.

Yes, he makes a mistake here and there, but that's down to the manager and his tactics/way of playing, not Steffen's fault.

They’ve already got Eze as a 10, and he got 10 goals last year, he isn’t getting dropped

I'll be honest it took me a bit of time to click for this, and I gave Steffen a rough ride some games. But he was simply following the game plan, and he wasnt going rogue using his feet etc. Got to respect the confidence to play like that too.

As with Akpom or any other player it is about getting best value from the budget and how much of it you want to spend on a particular player.

Steffen on loan at £30k per week costs in a year what a £15k per week players does bought for £3m on a 4 year deal.
The loan goes back eventually and the cost is sunk. The signing can either improve, grow in value and generate a profit, be sold to cover some of the remaining book value, or see his contract out and sink the whole fee.

IF the club sell Akpom for £15m, then his fee will have cost £2.75m over 3 years and allegedly been paid wages of £27k per week (offset by loan fees/wages). His cost will be £2.75m + £4.3m wages (max), so £7m (plus agents fees etc)
Middlesbrough would have enjoyed his considerable services and overall made £8m profit out of signing him.
Taking Archer (who I love by the way) or anyone else on loan and paying £30k per week wages for 3 years would leave us not owning a player to sell and having paid £4.7m.
It is some swing.
But not as big as signing Assombolonga for over £15m over 4 years, paying him min £40k per week and then seeing him leave at the end of his contract having cost over £23m.
So a swing between Akpom and Assombolonga of £31m.
Obviously you don't know what is going to happen, but it does highlight the value of Brighton or Brentford class recruitment, rather than Everton.

Ideally you would buy the right players, not loan them, but nobody gets all their purchases right.
At times loans make absolute sense to boost a squad, where you can not afford to buy/fund the quality you are loaning.

I posted a few days ago re Akpom that he is a complex puzzle for the hierarchy to solve, but the whole squad is a series of calculations/judgements about where and how to get the best value from the squad market value and the forthcoming budget.
Steffen/a Goalkeeper is a part of that whole scenario.

I think he is a good distributor, has improved considerably his command of his area, but remains too easily beaten by shots.
For me it's not do you accept the times he puts someone under pressure with a daft pass because of him starting so much of our play; rather it is do you accept he is going to let some saveable shots in because of his importance to setting up play?
If he had the lot he would be PL, but he doesn't so won't be. The question is how much of our budget would you spend on him and can you get better value elsewhere?
I'm personally not that bothered whether he stays or goes, as I could accept his shot stopping weakness in return for his importance to setting up play, but at a sensible price.

I would keep Steffen if the price is right. He is a great character, confident and very important to Carrick's style of play. I don't think goalkeepers who can play out as well as he does grow on trees, and most of them are found in the premier league. The soft goals are annoying though, he is no Randolph as a shot stopper. I think given we are likely to lose at least a few of our loans, Carrick will be keen to keep the ones he can, as it's less disruption/back to the drawing board.

No, because he really isn’t that great obviously, and by your comment, neither do you, if he was, they would be though.
I think there's a middle ground between someone not being good and every club in Europe being after them.
I think Hayden Hackney is good. I don't think Man City or Real Madrid or any top side are after him.
