When I look at Dael Fry I just feel like he should be better than he is. People often say he is a Premier League player (e.g. Maddo) but I am yet to see it and can only see a solid Championship CB, his attributes certainly don't suit the PL.
Daniel Ayala was to me our best CB we have had in this league and Fry has never come close to reaching the levels Ayala did in 2014-2016.

It's funny how quickly people forget his performances a few seasons back against some of the best strikers in the world. Kane, Ronaldo, Lukaku. Fry didn't look out of place. Against Kane and Ronaldo he didn't give them a kick.

Fingers crossed his form picks up as that's in everyone's best interests.

I agree with this - but the problem is his level of inconsistency.
Having Ronaldo in his back pocket loses it's allure when a year later he's being caught out week after week by average championship strikers.

Thats been Fry's problem ever since he started playing. His inconsistency. He has all the qualities to be a top centre half. He's just got more than his fair share of mistakes in him.
Obviously he's not great with the ball at his feet either which isn't ideal in the way Carrick wants us to play.

I think people need to realise nowadays that at the age of 26, this is Fry the player now.

The early performances against individuals were standout at times, but in reality he is a top half championship defender, hence the reason there has been very limited serious interest in him over the years.

Basically, he is what he is! and we need players to compliment his performances.

He isn't being caught out week after week by bang average championship strikers.

His biggest faults against Watford was positioning and concentration, those 2 through balls in particular. Another day he cuts them both out.

But by no stretch was Bayo having his life all game for instance

Two of the most important strengths for a defender are positioning and concentration.

Agree - and because he has those lapses, like Saturday is exactly why he is still playing for us after all of those years (in my opinion).

I actually think as a defender, i.e. up against a man he has that ability, but its the other side of the game he struggles.

LB - O’Brien and RVB have done well. Neither are in the poll! Bangura it’s too early to say. Definitely not Engel or Coulson.

CB - Lenihan without a doubt. Think a partnership with RVB could be developed, but RVB’s biggest problem might be his versatility and covering injuries elsewhere across the back. Kind of like Carragher did at Liverpool. Otherwise Fry or Clarke if he can get his form back.

RB - depends who is playing ahead of him. With Forss I would go for Smith. With Jones I would go for Dijksteel as they can work brilliantly together.

No O’Brien in the options so I didn’t answer as from what I currently know of the options he is by far the best option at LB

Dijksteel Lenihan Clarke VDB

I think this would be an excellent back four when Clarke can (hopefully🤞) get back to full fitness.

He is by no means the most complete defender, however on his game and you do have to take into account his propensity to drop out of form to be fair, he still has the highest ceiling in terms of quality. I agree with your sentiments regarding the way we play. I don't think he's 100% comfortable with the amount of exposure we face week to week. Having said that, i'd say the same about all our defenders.

I remain convinced that Bangura will eventually be our first choice LB.

RVDB and Leninhan CB with Smith RB.

Harsh on Fry but I reckon RVDB will have a greater resale eventually so makes sense to fast track his development.
