SPOTY 2023 - Shorlist

The favourite is a World Cup finalist.
I understand the point you're making, but historically nobody cared about the WWC, and I was talking historically. Its good that it now has a higher profile, helped by England's women being good.

Earps does deserve to be on the list, but I'm not sure she would be such a shoo in in many other years. Mead was a fully deserved winner last year.

Earps won nothing at club or international level (Finalissima being a Super Cup which don't usually carry a lot of kudos).

The mens's equivalent would be 2021 when the Men got to the Euros final. Sterling was the top player for England and made the Team of the Tournament. He also won the PL and League Cup with City as well as being runner-up in the Champions League.

Sterling finished 5th in that year's SPOTY.

Earps being nominated isn't the bit I would question. Being 1/10 favourite is. It is a very weak year though it seems . It does seem weird that Earps non-winning year in a low ranked sport would be seen above winning years for other people in other sports. BBC don't have many rights to major sports anymore so they do push things that they cover more than they "deserve" and women's football is definitely one of those things.

Yeah, but Raheem Sterling didn't give it a huge "F U CCC KK OFFFFFFFFF!" live on Sunday morning TV, which was one of my highlights of the year, tbh.

Yeah. But if he did, he wouldn't win SPOTY for it would he? In fact he'd probably be chastised for swearing when children are watching. Neil Warnock must be due a Lifetime Achievement award.

Must admit, if we want the sport to carry the same level of kudos for men and women, we need to stop treating women swearing in matches like its some kind of 'achievement'. The men do it all the time and are largely condemned for it, why is there so much hypocrisy? Why is women swearing such a big deal? Like Jill Scott telling a player to '**** off'. Surely we should judge them on their sporting merits. Of course women swear, but people get all giddy when a member of the football team does it. It actually detracts from what they’ve achieved as sportswomen.

Out of interest, from the shortlist, how many actually appeared on live BBC sport broadcasting? Probably only the 1/10 favourite if they showed the ladies WCF?

Basically, sport on the Beeb is a joke.

Bit of a naive question but how can the bookies be sure Earps is such a short odds favourite to win when it is a pure public vote?

Because bookies aren't interested how people vote but are interested in how people bet.
Ok so clearly patterns are that the money is going on Earps. After her blunder the other week which effectively ended ago hopes of an Olympic place I’m rather surprised so many expect her to win frankly. That said the opposition isn’t up to much and Johnson Thompson would get my vote. Not that I’m remotely interested in voting.
