Speed awareness course.

Mrs has recieved a notice of prosecution for speeding.
It's her first one after 35 yrs of driving.
She accepts she was speeding as she was doing 40 in a 30 zone . The zone has changed from a 40 to a 30 and she forgot.
Anyway she's hoping for a speed awareness course.
What I would like to know is do you pay for the course and the fine or is the payment for the course instead of the fine ?.
I would be surprised if she got offered a speed awareness course for doing 40 in a 30.

You wouldn’t get a course for doing 93 in a 70 .

She might be “lucky” as it’s her first offence.

I had to pay for mine online when I booked it, I think it was £90 ish, when the alternate fine for speeding was £60 plus the three points.

I got one for doing 41 in a 30 a few years back. I misread the road as it was duel lanes on both sides so assumed it was 40.

You're missing the point. The driver is NEVER to blame. Don't you get it?
I did a speed awareness course at Scotch Corner about 7 years ago, and the instructor went round the room asking why people were attending. Most of the responses were amazing clueless with zero self accountability.

I was overtaking a slower vehicle
I was late for work
The council recently changed the speed limits
The police are just making money
I was unfamiliar with the road
That road shouldn't be a 30
I am a good driver, I should be allowed to speed

Top quality all round.

for full disclosure, my reply was "because I got caught breaking the law. It was a nice day, the roads were empty, and I chose to drive over the speed limit" ( I was doing 68 in a 60 on the coast road to Scarborough)

Been on a few of these. I'm not a reckless driver, but will admit I drive over the speed limit fairly frequently. And when I get caught, that's just tough - my fault, take responsibility for it.

But the room always has at least one of "those blokes". Arms folded throughout, self appointed experts in traffic flow management every last one of them. And all a bunch of massive babies.

I get this 100%.

I used to try to justify myself (especially to my wife who has a 30 year unblemished driving licence) by saying it was only to be expected given that I used to drive 25k miles a year, to which she shut me down by replying "if you didn't break the law, it wouldn't matter how many miles a year you drive" and its difficult to argue with that reasoning.

Just got one from West Yorks Police doing 65mph in a temp 50mph zone on M1, would that be an offer of a course or straight to fixed penalty do you think??

I was 86 in a 70 and got offered one with North Yorkshire police.

Just found this online.

For the speed awareness course, the speed of the offence must fall within the criteria stated below:

  • 30 mph up to and including 42 mph
  • 40 mph up to and including 53 mph
  • 50 mph up to and including 64 mph
  • 60 mph up to and including 75 mph
  • 70 mph up to and including 86 mph

The Mrs was offered a speed awareness course in August. She is going to the course rather than doing it online.
Cost was £73 in Middlesbrough and you don't have to pay the fine which was £100

Just booked mine for £73 in Hartlepool. Doing it online, 4 and a bit hours round trip......

This or a £100 fine and 3 points.🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Wondering, why would you accept the points?
