Southport Stabbings

You would hope that mental illness is at the core of this case, wouldn't you? Rather than just an outright act of evil.
Mental illness could be the only explanation for a not guilty plea.

If his defence team were planning to make an application for fitness to plead or insanity then they likely would have made it known at this stage and pleas wouldn't have been entered on his behalf.

Most of these people who do this sort of thing are no doubt mentally ill but even if it is proven mental illness, he's shound never be let loose, might be harsh but tough, needs to be kept locked up you safely of public.

I sincerely hope he doesn’t get to spend his time in a secure hospital rather than a Prison, like Valdo Calocane is thanks. Mental Illness is no excuse for what he is alleged to have done, murderers of kids, or anyone really should be in Prison, by all means with access to treatment, but no cushier environments than a prison would be.

It is possible to suffer with mental illness and be an evil person at the same time.

Or perhaps he wouldn’t be evil if wasn’t suffering from severe mental illness

Yes what we want is severely mentally ill people locked up in regular prisons and mixing with inmates who don’t suffer from the same issues. What could possibly go wrong with putting a paranoid schizophrenic in with a person in for GBH and a run-of-the-mill shoplifter. There would be no bother whatsoever.

But thats not what I said though was it, it is what your head assumed I meant, well done you jumping to conclusions, maybe clarify first next time!

I mean, what could go wrong housing a homeless severely mentally ill paranoid schizophrenic in a social housing block of flats next door to a shop lifter or a drug dealer or a little old lady with a Yorkshire Terrier that barks a bit?

Prisons can have and some do have specialist wings for various category of prisoner now. We are building new Prisons, why not have them for various degrees and levels of mental illness with a specialist available where necessary.

You seem to imply that if you have a mental illness that should get you a different pass. Mental illness has all forms of causes and behaviours as you no doubt well know. How easy would it be for an evil person to research mental illnesses and behaviours and play that card for a while. People have tried it before. What about the victims and their families, you can see how Calocanes verdict went down and was met with unanimous approval.

Should a person that doesn’t take their meds get treated differently when they are allegedly safe to live in the community by experts? Nah, sorry, Mentally Ill murderers are still murderers and deserve no easier time than anyone else, I accept treatment should be given alongside and in a specialist Prison, not a hospital that is somewhat cushty even if secure.

I’m not implying anything tbh. I’ll openly say that anyone suffering from a mental illness who commits a heinous crime should be removed from society and held in a secure unit. I don’t think that represents a ‘different pass’. I don’t think it’s an ‘easier time’ either. You seem to have a mistrust of the expertise of mental health experts and professionals if you think they can be duped or tricked so easily.

I think if a mentally ill person commits a terrible crime then they should be treated in a secure, specialist hospital with a view to being managed and potentially rehabilitated(to what extent I’m not sure). I don’t view secure mental hospitals as ‘cushty’ or ‘easy’ or anything like that. That’s just me. I don’t expect anyone else to agree.

We don’t know his motives, we haven’t had the trial yet. We will find out in due course.
Hopefully, but you'd think having guide on how to commit terrorist acts and actually being in the process of producing ricin make his motives pretty clear. Lets just hope that there's full disclosure after the trial, but I somehow doubt it.
