Southgate confirms Henderson for Bellingham tomorrow

I meant it wouldn't compute for Gareth!

Yeah I'd rest Mount. If Henderson is playing along with Rice that's two centre mids to protect for me, giving us a bit more freedom further up to try and create more. Maybe rest Sterling too, Gareth has his favourites though and it would be a huge 'egg on face' type call if we lose.

I honestly can't see him leaving out Bellingham, Mount and Sterling and starting Grealish and Foden though. I'd like to see any of Maddison, Grealish, Foden and Rashford get a run out in the '3' really. I'm not a fan of taking players to barely use or rigidly sticking to your 'got to' players in each position. I hate it when established players with 30-50 caps are brought on in friendlies too. Probably just me that though. I'd tell Kane if he isn't central up front for 75% of the first twenty minutes he's getting hooked as well. I cannot fathom for the life of me why he's so deep and wide all the time, he was in the Euros too.

-----------------------------Pickford-------------------------

----Walker-------Stones-----------Maguire----------Shaw---

--------------------Rice------------Henderson--------------

-------------Saka-----------Grealish----------Foden----------

------------------------------Kane-------------------------------

Bring Sterling, Rashford and Wilson on after 60 minutes to run them ragged.
swap foden to the center for grealish and thats probably the team

Probably not a bad move. I'm pretty sure Wales will just try to kick hell out of our midfield (probably the only chance they've got) and having an older/wiser head in there might be sensible.

That said, Henderson can be "got at" - wouldn't surprise me at all if he loses it and sees red at some point.

I think i'd play

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire
Trent Hendo Rice Trippier
Foden
Rashford Kane

Grealish, Wilson, Maddison, Dier or White off the bench around 60-65mins. Mix it up, get some minutes in some important squad legs while still playing a team very capable of hammering the opposition, creativity with the full backs and the no10, pace at the back with Walker, height with Maguire to cope with Moore.

Bellingham doesn't need resting. He's 19 years old and has played 2 games (substituted off in one no less) in about 3 weeks.
Resting Bellingham is the right call.

Yes he's 19 and young enough to be playing plenty of games in quick succession, but maybe it's not about rest and more of injury prevention.

Our 3rd team should beat Wales comfortably, and other than a humongous collapse, we will have a place in the last 16.

Fully agree with Southgate in 'resting' Jude.

He's arguably our most important player. Definitely in the top 3.

At 19, two weeks recovery is more than enough. He physically doesn't need resting. If he isn't starting it's because Southgate doesn't have faith in him for this game. No other reason.

Edit: Could be tactical also to be fair.

Doesn't have faith?

There's ways to bash Southgate, but you're literally scraping the barrel with this.

He's blatantly giving someone else game time, whilst resting Jude as on paper this game is a piece of pi$$ and we've already pretty much qualified.

You'd probably slate Southgate if Jude started and picked up an injury ruling him out of the rest of the tournament.

Quite honestly, it would be silly to even risk playing Jude in this match tonight.

I'm not scrapping the barrel with anything nor am i bothered about slating Southgate. I'm not even that bothered about England. I'm a Middlesbrough fan. I'm just plain talking general observations. I would agree that he could be giving other players game time; that's plausible.
Seems strange the way you're talking about Beillingham like he's a superstar and the fulcrum of the team though, particularly after his performance against the US. I have no doubt that he's going to be. He has some phenomenal talent but his performances to date for England have been inconsistent.
There have been a lot of shouts for Foden (and rightly so)...i'd imagine Southgate is looking to see if he can shoe horn Foden in to the team and fall onto a winning formula.

Because he is one of our superstars. He's by far and away our best midfielder. No one even comes remotely close.

If he got injured/suspended...or for whatever reason, became unavailable for the rest of the tournament, then we would be royally screwed.

I don't agree with that. Sounds a little bit like you're believing the hype before he's really, truely proven himself. I think he's on a par with Mount personally. Mount has of course proved himself in the Premier League, on the international stage and at european level and he's also been inconsistent of late if truth be told.
Bellingham has done very well on the European stage. That's where his promise originated realistically and this could well be his breakthrough tournament but he's not a pivotal player. Not yet.
Rice is a quality midfielder too, i'd hazard that England would struggle more if they lost Rice.

Having Henderson alongside Bellingham makes sense - an experienced head to support him though the game.

It wouldn't surprise me if Southgate sticks with a back four for the last 16 (assuming it's Ecuador or Senegal) and goes with a midfield 3 of Rice, Henderson and Bellingham.

Wow. That is an insult to Jude IMO.

I have watched a lot of his games and I firmly believe he'll go on to become one of the worlds best in his position.

Jude's performances for Dortmund have been incredible. He's faced Man City a number of times in the last few seasons and actually come out against them on top on several of occasions. He is one of the best performers in this seasons Champions League and has carried that on from last season.

Then his performances for England have been very good. He dragged us a result out of the bag on his own against Germany a few games back and that's not just one off neither.

This is all whilst he is 19 years old.

Mount goes missing a lot in big games, both for club and country. That's not something you can label at Jude.

...except against the US, literally in his last game?

Sterling Kane Foden
Mount Rice Bellingham

That would be my front six.

That’s really going to improve our midfield movement 🤦‍♂️
movement wasn't the issue last game, the correct movement was. Bellingham looked lost last game. He's bound to have some inconsistency and with us being essentially already through, then it's an opportunity to give him a rest.

Lets also be honest about this, Henderson is a decent player still and far more mobile than his opponent Ramsey.
