Soooo.... Whats Hackney's valuation?

A really good performance last night by Hackney, and in a slightly different role - he looked to be playing much deeper than we use him.

So inevitably the questions are raised about how long we can keep hold of him etc, and I have no idea, I honestly think it will be more down to him, if he gets itchy feet or not towards the end of the season and promotion isnt on the cards.

Anyway I digress, my question is, if there is interest in January, and he wants out (not saying he will!) what is the realistic valuation the club needs to be looking at?

My first thought is £25 million, and I'll show my working out;

Using Alex Scott as an example from Bristol City, moved to Bournemouth for £20 million up front and £5 million add-ons to be paid within 3 years (only what I have read in the summer).

Scott is 20 years old (Hackney now 21), both English.

Scott has racked up 9 u20 international caps, Hackney has 4 u21 international caps (across a couple of nations ;))

Scott played a total of 80 games for Bristol over 2 years since his break through season, come January Hackney (god willing injury free!) has the potential to have played around 70 games for us, I think he is currently on around 53/54, over a similar 2 year period, plus 28 games for Scunthorpe previously.

I would say the 2 are not a million miles apart in terms of development and potential, soooo do you think;

- £20/25 million is a fair valuation
- More importantly, would you accept it?

Can't fault your working out. I'd be hoping for an increased premium purely on the position and the skill set Hackney has is very much "In" at the moment.

Countless teams in the Prem struggle to find players to play that deeper role, who can still instigate attacks and comfortable in possession n tight areas. Add on the inevitable young English Tax and 20-25 mil isn't unrealistic.

The point about getting itchy feet is a valid one. You just need to look at Fry, He was linked with lots of premier league clubs and never moved. Can't say any will still be sniffing around now. Although I guess you also have the example of Gibson. Had a couple of nightmare seasons after moving on.

Either way the lad looks an even better player this season. Just watching how strong he is on the ball, and the speeds in which he moves the ball. I'm sure he'll have a career at the top. I'd say at the moment the club would probably be looking at around £20m for him, mainly due to the amount of time left on his contract.

I think we did Ramsey a massive favour. Loved him here but he underwhelmed at Norwich and only played a handful for a games for us.

He shone in those games, but they were games for a confident, open, attacking side for a manager who gave him a lot of freedom to express himself. Those games have got him his permanent move.

If you look at his career as a whole, still very unproven. Massive potential, but IMO he doesn't get that transfer without playing under Carrick. In fact he'd most likely be back out on loan in the championship.

Agree with that. I still think his and Howson's injury's are the main reason we went off the boil last season

Yep, bar the few months with us, approx 10 games? He has had a pretty uneventful couple of loans, and certainly nobody would have entertained nearly £15 million for him.

Those half a dozen games for us before his injury where everything really clicked probably added £10 million to his value!

He won't be going anywhere in January. Teams buy players to play in January, they don't tend to buy prospects and anyone hanging their hopes on a 21 year old championship midfielder is probably in too much trouble already to be worth signing for. He will most likely move to a club in the summer, similar to what Alex Scott has done to a bottom half PL team. That limits his potential fee because teams at that end are spending mega amounts on potential. The teams that pay the really big money for players will buy him after he's had a good season in the PL.

Obviously, us being promoted would change all of that but that is an unlikely scenario.

Knowing our history of selling players we will probably not get the fee we should for him.

Easy to forget as well but at the time there was a lot of discussion on here about who was in our best XI Ramsey or McGree. So how much is McGree worth? And he's out of contract in 2025.

His valuation really depends on who the interested party is. That's not how it should work but unfortunately that's how it does work.
I think £15-20m is about right (with a sell on % clause) and if a Wolves, Brighton or West Ham came in for him that's what we would get. If he catches the eye of one of the big hitters like Liverpool, United, Chelsea then I think we realistically can get £25m+.

Like others have said it will come down to Hackney and what he wants. As much as the lad seems to be loving his time at Boro and playing under Carrick, if a Premier League club show genuine interest it will be very difficult for him to not push for that move and why not. He's on around £15k / week I believe and he could be earning triple that, at least, in the Premier League. Even if Boro were going to come back to the table and offer new improved terms we can't get close to PL money.

If he has ambitions to be playing for England then he needs to be playing in the Premier League, He might give us until the end of the season. He might give us another season after. As much as it pains me as a boro fan and a big Hackney fan, I personally think he should be looking to take that move as soon as it becomes an option for him. He might never get that opportunity again. Injuries or drop in form could be around the corner, You never know what lies ahead.

Very good point.

The ship can quickly sale and the next promising young talent emerges fast in the Championship

If chelsea were interested then I think it would be rude not to start negotiations at 100mill wouldn't it?

Think he needs to pick his move with care. Akpom being an extreme example.

He needs a side that's going to look to dominate possession and play to his strengths. He needs technically good players around him to be at his best. I think that's a bit different to someone like Tav who probably won't end up at the same level, but because of his energetic style of play can go and fit in pretty much anywhere. Even if the rest of his team mates are crap.

He also needs to be playing. That might rule out the really big hitters, but someone like Brighton could be ideal for his next step.

I love McGree. Think he's a brilliant Championship player. I think his lack of pace limits his value. One of the big differences between the Championship and the PL is the pace of the game and it's very difficult to play in that league without pace.
