So what/who do we need to start the season?

Probably am crackers👍
We are all expecting Spence to go, but on the off chance he doesn't then we are looking at strikers which may be a bit cheaper. I think the four names are stronger than what we had last season, which wouldn't be harder to be fair. I expect Duncan to be better after having a full season and not picking up a big injury, and Josh is definitely going to be better, I expect advancements in his play. Then it comes down do we think DG and DM are better than the two Loanees last year. Imo there is at least 20 more goals in that 4 than last year + with other improvements in the team for creating chances from both flanks.
As I say, I think you are crackers :)
We need much more quality than you suggest to trouble the top two.
And that has to be the aim.
No talk of aiming for the play offs.

Spence will go, he has to,marquee signings have being mentioned, still to arrive, two top strikers would be perfect.
C'mon Boro

Agree with you and anyone else who says the aim is top two, but it is dependant on the Spence money and that isn't a given so what can we aim for within our reach at the moment. Personally with our recent purchase of strikers then I rather go with less on a striker and money elsewhere, such as left footed CB and then look at the lower leagues and take two from there.

Wilder was in before the idea of getting good money for spence was in mind . I’m not 100% it’s required for top 2 targets but maybe if we don’t have it then it’s 1 decent strikers and 1 gamble rather that 2 proven decent strikers .
It’s all a guess at the end of the day but wel know soon enough

A goalkeeper (Steffen, Iversen or Darlow) with the new young lad as no2
2 - maybe 3 if we include a loanee - Strikers from (Gyokeres, Armstrong, McGoldrick, Gayle, others)
A centre back (left footed, holy grail)
Shifting some players on (Bola, Payero, Ikpeazu, Hall, Akpom, Spence, Coulson - plus maybe 1 of McNair, Tav or Fry)

Do all that by start of the season and we're laughing.

Goalkeeper
Zachary Steffen

Left sided centre backs
Ben Davies
Jarred Braithwaite

Strikers
Dwight Gayle
David McGoldrick
Adam Armstrong
Viktor Gyökeres

Then maybe back up for Jones & Giles

Assuming no other exits, I'd say we'd be set with that.
But I think a few more players will be moved on, so they'll probably need replacing.

1 goalkeeper - Zachary Steffen

1 left centre-back - Ben Davies

3 strikers - Dwight Gayle, David McGoldrick and one other

1 defensive midfielder - now this is the one that’s a bit of chin stroker for me. Left footed? Can he play left centre back too? Can he speak Spanish..

For the first team I think we need 4 players. 1st choice keeper, left footed centre half, 2 strikers.

Steffan
McNair Lenihan/Fry Greaves
Jones Crooks Howson Tav Giles
Gyokeres Armstrong

I’m certain that starting 11 would be capable of challenging for the top 2, even pushing for top spot but strength in depth is just as important and that is where we need to be clever, we need players who know they will have to battle for an opportunity and want to do so. Players who will be motivated to push for the first XI. We need a lot of players in for depth. Minimum needed would be cover for Jones, Howson and at least one striker. The cover for Howson being the most important one as this needs to be someone who can take the burden of Howson this season and really look to cement their place going into next season. I wouldn’t mind another left footed centre half as well.

Roberts
Dijk Lenihan/Fry Forsyth/Barbet/Colwill(loan)
Smith/Byrne
Payero Sheaf/Ledson/Downes McGree Bola
McGoldrick Gayle/Cornick

I make that a minimum of 7 signings still needed and ideally 9. That’s is also before anyone (other than the expected Spence/Hall/Coulson/Akpom etc) leaves. I think the most likely to leave are Fry, Tav, Payero and Bola. It wouldn’t surprise me if these were done in the same manner as the second XI, with cheaper deals such as Helik, Knight/Doyle, Bird/Amos, Hume/Maatsen(loan).

Realistically will probably be looking at 5-6 more signings but it’s silly season so I’m going with 9!

Adam Armstrong alongside Josh Coburn, big man little man combo - job sorted, no need to spend £15m on one striker when we potentially have our own home grown diamond already here. Give the boy Coburn a chance to shine an he’ll get double figures for us I’m sure
He was half way there last season with his cameo roles so I’d expect double figures if he’s given the chance this season

I remember listening to Wilder after the Preston game and he definitely said we will get some decent money for a couple of players, one of which we knew (Spence). I am quite intrigued as to who the other will be. If we are to get decent money then it must be for someone we would need to replace. I think it will be one of our CBs, just not sure who.

I think he’ll go out on loan to get his numbers up. One hell of a prospect!
