Against the Speaker
Gawd…. Isn’t politics just rubbish
Can’t help thinking SNP siding with the Tories isn’t a good look.
It’s worse than that it’s specifically contrary to standing orders. The Speaker’s decision to select both amendments, while contrary to convention and the advice of the clerks, was his to make. At most it went against unwritten rules. The deputy’s decision to vote on the Labour amendment first was against the written ones.SNP are right to be furious as their motion should be voted on first
"In an exception to the normal rules of debate, the main motion (the opposition motion) is debated and voted on first, rather than any amendment. This is to allow a decision on the opposition motion to be taken first, before any amendment is put."
The SNP didn’t table an amendment it tabled the substantive motion. It was their day.it seems the Speaker was warned of the consequences of accepting two amendments but went ahead and did it anyway. The consequences being that the Tories withdraw their amendment meaning that if the Labour one passes, the SNP's own amendment on their own opposition day will not be debated.
Yes I pointed out that it was their day in the quote, but I made a typo. My point stands. The SNP didn’t table an amendment it tabled the substantive motion. It was their day.
I think the Tories jumped on the opportunity too, but they’re already nothing more than a charcoaled mess alreadyIt feels like the SNP tried to play party politics and got burned.
I think it’s much more than that, the snps stock is low because of corruption. They are in a 2 way fight with Labour in most seats. They wanted to paint Labour as anti-Palestine or anti-Semite, depending on which way Labour MPs voted. The SNP are kicking off because they want the credit for a call for a ceasefire, nothing more.
