Snooker Selby v Brecel

The standard of the top professionals is amazing.

I remember in my playing days years back playing alongside a lad called Jon Birch. I was a good player (had a ton plus break to my name) but he was many, many times better.

He turned professional as we all expected and then didn't really achieve anything in his professional career - just wasn't good enough to live with the top pros.

The standard has improved loads since then as well, the consistency of the players is incredible.
He had better waistcoats than any of the competition though!

The current World Professional Billiards Champion, David Causier, comes from Middlesbrough. He plays for Beechwood and Easterside in the local Leagues. He beat Peter Gilchrist in the Final, who also comes from Middlesbrough (used to play for Acklam Steelworks). None of the current top Snooker players would beat him at Billiards. There isn’t any money in the game though. Probably only a couple of thousand pounds for winning the World title!

David Causier played in the boys leagues a few years after me so I don’t know him. Never played him, but did play Peter Gilchrist once. Beat him too 👍

Mike Russell is another multi world champion, used to play for Markse. I played him once too, in a semi final of the league individual trophy. He was off form (for him) but nerves got the better of me and I was terrible.

I remember missing an easy shot and leaving him with a good opportunity. As I missed I said ‘oh god’ and he looked me dead in the eye and said ‘he won’t help you now’ 🤣

He was quite arrogant really, was better than everyone else and acted like he knew it. Peter Gilchrist, on the other hand, was a lovely lad.

Yes Mike Russell was probably the best Billiards player the area has produced but, as you say, not a very good character. He has had a few run ins with the authorities over the years! Agree with what you said about Peter Gilchrist. Great lad. Lives abroad now but did see him in the Steelworks a few weeks ago talking to Darren Kell (another former UK champion) who plays with me for Jack Hatfields.
There’s not many Clubs left Sherlock. I played for Middlesbrough Labour, the Clarence Club, Westgarths and Dormans who are now either closed or dropped out the Leagues. Who did you play for?

Newport in the boys league, later for the Sammies and then the Endeavour Snooker Centre in the men’s leagues.

So you’ll know some of the Steelies current team then. They all went there when the Sammys closed down. They are a good table side. (y)

Sherlock / Samba, does anyone ever talk about the long blue I potted back in the late 90s early 2000s in Billingham Snooker club?

White up near the baulk end, blue on its spot. Wallop!! Right in the bottom pocket!!

I can talk of nothing else over dinner 👍
Think they retired that blue after that mate. Probs had to as it was all cracked and mishapen after that shot. The Billingham Blue it’s known as locally!

Honestly I was unbelievable, just used to use the rests for banter even if I didn’t need them!

Took a few shots with the spider just for the craic.
