Small boats

For the first time yesterday uk border control immediately took a certain number of migrants who arrived yesterday in a small boat straight back on a boat to France in conjunction with the French authorities.
👏🏻
New government new sentiment from the French.
I said this and hoped the French would show friendship and warm words rather than threats, name calling and dangerous rhetoric from cruella et al for years would work with the French 🇫🇷

Progress in 2 weeks after the Tories spent £500 million and more on Rwanda. That’s our tax we pay the government flushed directly down the drain

That's not correct.
£84m has been pledged for projects in Africa and the Middle east to stop illegal migration at source.
It's clearly only one element of the policy.
100% this. Not forgetting about the whole new border security command operation. The difference is this money might make an actual difference rather than the Rwanda scheme which was just peeing money up a wall for kicks.

The first important point is that stopping boats shouldn't be about stopping seeking asylum. The tories wanted it to mean just that. It should be about stopping needless deaths in the channel.

Labour are trying to remove the criminal element in small boat crossings. And, by extension the deaths.

You then need to either process people that don't have safe routes in France, or provide safe routes for all.

The final part if the jigsaw, and it isn't complex, is to process asylum seekers quickly and either return them or integrate well meaning human beings into our economic system where they can work and contribute. Their taxes then go to alleviate the pressures on schools and hospitals by contributing to their funding.

This has been the nub of the problem for years. A massive failure to process applications on a timely basis, thus the huge cost of temporary accommodation, and massive frustration for those in it.. Then a huge failure to repatriate those who fail asylum once processed (bar a reasonably efficient returning scheme with Albania, which was prompted by Albania being concerned it was running out of working aged men).

If you know that IF you make it over the channel you are unlikely to be be sent back you will risk everything to get across. if you know chances are it will be a 6 week visit, then your unlikely to pay £5k to a criminal gang for a seat in an underinflated overcrowded dingy.

The conservative party deliberately engineered the situation so they had a villain and something to blame. Literally playing with people's lives. A great deal of what happened didn't have to. I would argue it suited their purposes down to the ground to put them up in hotels in areas to literally give people a target for their wrath. When they could have, if they had chosen, quietly got on with the very boring and non-headline grabbing concept of ... processing asylum properly.

If an asylum seeker is rejected, what happens to them? Where are they repatriated to? France or the country if their origin? What if they have no passport - how do we know where they are from?

I don't know the complete answer to this, but there will be processes. Asylum isn't a new thing. The last government just weaponised it.

Where has this been reported. Posted it to so of my (lets say) right wing friends and they will be asking where it came from.

I felt Rwanda was all about posturing and demonstrating how tough the government were on immigration rather than actually doing anything about the boats.

The concept of deterrents is populist, but I don't think there much evidence it works if you don't address the root causes of the problem.

Here on the South Coast, it's probably the best day this year for small boats to try to cross. Perfect weather. If today's numbers are high it will clearly be the fault of our 2-week-old government.

Well I suppose their travel plans at least won't be too badly affected by the IT outage...
