Do you have any managerial experience Trug? When this knackered old laptop is playing silly buggers with me I just give it a right b0llocking and threaten to stop using it entirely and to just use my work laptop instead if it doesn't pull its bloody finger out and sort itself out and that usually works. You can't let machines get above their station. They need to be put in their place. If you don't remind them who's boss then before you know it they'll have conquered the world and enslaved us.

Whats slow?

The laptop operation or the internet/wifi?

How old is the laptop?

Have you changed anything - installed new programmes/software that could be hogging resources?

What have you done with ccleaner - just cleaned your browser or have you checked what programmes load when your computer starts?

Have done a virus check?

Sadly there isn't a magic programme that will speed up your machine.

Could have spyware on your system, malware etc...

Download the free version of Malwarebytes and run a scan with that to see if it picks out up

Also, has the laptop recently only started going slow? How much RAM does it have?

More serious reply here. I've found that Google Chrome can be a right b****d on this old laptop if you leave it running for too long without shutting it down every once in a while. Also my torrent client does the same thing. Just gradually eats up more and more of the laptop's resources and slows it down unless I shut it down and restart it pretty regularly.

give us a clue how old, was it quick before, what OS is it, does it have an ssd or mechanical disc, how much ram have you got.

Have you checked that the CPU isn't over heating? I had the same problem with a older laptop I was given as it was running slow and overheating, took the fan out and cleaned it and took the cpu heat sink out, cleaned that then put some new decent thermal paste on it(thermal paste can dry up and stop conducting heat after a while, and it's amazing how much dust can accumulate in a laptop or desktop fan). A few bits of simple hardware maintenance and the laptop was up and running

It is an Acer Aspire 3, 4GB RAM,- Celeron HD, 4yrs old
It is slow loading when I start up- usually about 3-4 minutes but sometimes longer.
I don't often download stuff- only newspapers now and then. always on FMTTM though, CPU says it is at 100% when loading but I cannot see what it is that is using that much. It is Windows 10 and I use Firefox but have have used others such as Chrome and Edge and it is still the same. I have uninstalled Chrome, Edge is still here but I rarely use it.

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and select Task Manager and click on the Processes tab and then on the CPU tab and see what processes are using the CPU most
That won't always help. I had an old laptop that was constantly running at 100% CPU but according to Task Manager everything was fine. That may well have been a fan/ overheating issue though as Druss suggested above. I shouldn't really be posting on this thread. I know sod all about computers.

I do FD- The graph shows 100% usage but the list of programmes all show low usage that does not come anywhere near 100%

First thing I would do is look at the event viewer to see if there are any error messages

make sure you are viewing process by ALL users not just you ie the system and others masquerading
If you are at 100% then that is why its slow - you need to know which processes are using the % you don't see

It could also be down to Brexit or those damn Tories of course
