Sleep problems

Does anyone else on here suffer from insomnia? I've gone the last 2 nights just laid in bed waiting for the alarm to go off at 7am. I do have tinnitus as well, which sis fairly bad. I have tried an ear piece in with "white noise". While it so the 3 of 4 different tinnitus sounds, I find the "white noise" equally annoying :D

On an average night, I might get max 3 hours sleep, the last 2 have been bad. I am seeing a nurse tomorrow, but I don't just want 2 weeks of sleeping pills, as I been there before and the insomnia returns days later.

Anyone had a cure for it? Or methods to help sleep? I meditate while in bed so my head isn't like a washing machine anymore, so at least I am "resting"

I’ve suffered badly with it for about 6 month, but have been much better the last few weeks.

Things that work for me are relaxation techniques (had to google and try a few til I found ones that seemed to work better for me) … plus of course the obvious ones like getting plenty of fresh air / exercise, and not eating or drinking too late.

And, easier said than done, be strict about getting into a consistent sleep pattern… bed at the same time, up at the same time, no naps when you get in from work etc

Not insomnia but my MS and general muscle twitching overnight caused my sleep to be around 4 hours a night.
Was prescribed some tablets to relax my muscles but didn’t like the look of them as the side effects looked grim.
Went down the medical cannabis route with Sapphire clinic and now take oil and vape a small amount and my sleep has gone up to around 6 hours.
Might be worth a go?

I suppose you have tried the Rain Rain App.
Myself I have been prescribed pills to take a couple of hours before bedtime. They were to deal with awful “body itching “ originally. But they apparently are also an anti depressant.
With me they also knock me out and I suppose I am on them for life.

I cant sleep for more than 2 hours at a time. First started during the pandemic, when I suffered hugs anxiety and stress about my new business. I would wake in the night so full of adrenalin that I had to walk around the house for hours on end. Business went bust, but I still cant sleep, I am awake for four hours and then sleep for two all thoughout the day. Can not work anymore as I couldnt cope with a 7 hour day.

I would love to find a way to sort it out too.

Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces naturally to relax and induce sleep.
Melatonin tablets can be bought cheaply without prescription in the US from any drug store.
Here they are prescription only. No idea why.
I use one 3mg for a couple of nights to prevent jet lag issues.
It seems that some on-line uk pharmacies will issue a prescription and supply.
More expensive than in the US but worth a try.
If you know someone visiting the US………

You can get clocks etc with a wide range of sleep sounds now instead of just white noise. Some also have sunrise/sunrise features which also help with the body's circadian rhythm.

Worth a try.

Have severe Tinutus myself, so feel your pain Sadgit. I need to control it by habits. I dont drink (well cant), exercise loads, eat healthy so no proccessed food, sugar foods, limit caffeine. Audio books or podcasts to fall asleep.

I've had a max of about 3 hours sleep a night for about 6 months now - I was diagnosed with a baby son who is a bit of tw@t at night.
It gets better when they're about 2. But, in my case, the 7 year old then starts needing you in the night as well, so you still dream of getting more than 4 hours.

When I was young I was a terrible insomniac. I managed to cure it with two things:

a) my Dad told not to worry about how much sleep I'm getting, rest is rest as long as you're lying down. Maybe try some podcasts/audiobooks while you lie there so it feels like time well spent?

b) staying up until I am absolutely knackered. I have done this every night since I was about 15, and I'm asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow as a result. Yeah, people will say 'you need 8 hours' but sometimes you have to just take the lesser of two evils.

Read a book/magazine - something made of paper not an electronic screen. To sort of wear your brain down into sleep.

Exercise during the day to wear the body down.

Buy blackout curtains.

Keep your bedding clean and fresh

I do find I used to sleep a regular 8 to 8.5 hours when younger, now its more like 5 or 6 hours and rarely feel bouncy during the day as sometimes did when younger. When younger though if I slept for only 5 hours I would be struggling to function the next day.

I'm not great at shutting down and also have tinnitus and I find anything spoken word quietly in the background helps tremendously, I've tried music and things like rain or waves on a beach without it really working for me. Radio 4 and the World Service are good through the night. Some interesting stuff to listen to if you're not asleep that will stop you lying there thinking "I wish I could just go to sleep, I wish I could just go to sleep, I wish I could just go to sleep..." and beating yourself up about it.

I suspect this may be similar to your meditation but what “cured” me was work brought in a breathing therapist as part of a wellness session to aid quality sleep.

Guess who fell asleep in the room practicing the technique.

Never looked back and my ability to fall asleep anywhere anytime using the breathing routines is really ******* off the wife.

I’m currently on a course of hypnotherapy for some other stuff, but he gave me a 45 minute sleep recording which I never sleep through, and I’ve not slept better for years. If you want me to send via WhatsApp, just pm me, and I’ll forward it

I've suffered quite a bit over the years and still don't sleep too well. I wake up about 3 or 4 times a night for no apparent reason. As mentioned above - I put R4 on really low and that usually takes me back to sleep.

A few years ago - a psychologist suggested that you shouldn't just lie there awake as your brain starts to associate being in bed wide awake.
I also tried "Brown noise" - sound of waves, waterfall or rain which helped me. There are a few long audio bits out there
I lived near a mosque for quite a while and the early morning call to prayer (although very soothing) always woke me up - in those days I used foam ear plugs and once you get used to them, are very good.

I struggle to sleep without the fan being on, which isn't bad in the summer but can be a bit annoying in the winter especially for my wife who absolutely hates it.

I think it's more the noise of it more than anything that helps me. Got one of those Meaco fans and they are fairly quiet, one of the best purchases I've made!
