Signings

I would be happy if we kept the core of the team from last season, but just got a really decent striker and keeper think it would make us a really good team, obviously we need to replace any players released or sold

I just don't see how we sell Tav for enough money to even cover him with a like for like - we will be taking a massive risk eg we get about 1 in 5 signings (or worse) correct . Whoever we sign for whatever money we get for Tav will cost us a lot more in wages than Tav is at the moment.

Stick with Tav, as I believe we will miss him if he goes.
It’s either sell him or let him go for free next summer. I don’t see that being an option really

McGree as replacement for Tav? It would be a downgrade imo but not a massive one.

Howson has been excellent this season but I'm not sure how long he can keep those performances up for. I think we could be in the market for a replacement, or at the minimum some competition for him.

I actually think that while he's been great, I'm not sure if it's exactly the role Wilder wants from him. He covers nearly every blade of grass but whilst at blades he employed Norwood in that role and he was much more static, linking play with longer balls as the two either side of him played box to box. It's actually similar to the role Crooks played under Warnock for a time.

2 good strikers 1 dynamic midfielder and a keeper - that would do us I think
For the starting 11 I agree (at a push). Lots of cover needed at CB, LWB, RWB and probably one other in midfield though.

That said, I can't see us sorting that in one window. I reckon we'll probably be in a similar position to this season with a good (improved) first 11 but not much depth. Hopefully Crooks keeps his head on re: yellows and we don't get many injuries!

Two, probably three strikers.

RWB cover, unless Gibson is promoted to first team squad.

LWB

LCB

Cover/competition for Crooks.

Cover/competition for Howson.

Two keepers.

So that's ten without any going; add more of Fry, McNair, Howson or Tav go.

Need a replacement for Bamba too, to cover in for Fry when he gets injured as he does regularly. Hall will leave and isn't good enough or fit enough anyway.

Yes, need conowtition for Fry, you're right (so that's 11 I think).

I have a suspicion that CW may cash in on Fry this summer too.

Ultimately I'd agree double figures, but history tells us we won't get that many in during pre-season.

Quite a few usually come in just before transfer deadline after the season starts. Incidentally, I'm not sure when that is this year, not sure if it's moved due to the World Cup calendar reshuffle?

Hopefully we can get most of the key positions filled in before the season starts though so players can build up that on pitch understanding.
According to a few sites, the window opens June 10th and closes 11pm on Sept 1st. Internationals from July 1st

That's 5 game weekends plus some midweek games plus EFL cup after we start on July 30th before it closes.

I think there's a decent chance of him being offered, and signing, a new contract

You would hope the likes of Tav and Fry will at worst sign a one year extension then give it one last go at getting promotion with Boro, then leave if we can't do it next year.

The slight worry for me (not sure if I'm overthinking) is the sale of Spence. Everyone seems to be assuming it's nailed on he'll go and we get 15/20m in the kitty.

However all the clubs know he doesn't seem to want to be here and we need to offload. Therefore we could potentially struggle to accommodate him in the squad if we can't sell. Could that be used to drive the price down or could clubs even think they could hang fire and get him one a free next year? Potentially even a cheeky loan bidfor next year if it gets near to the transfer window closing and we're still left with an asset who doesn't want to play and start getting desperate. Hope it doesn't play out like this but I do have an ever so slight worry.

Thanks for the info @Northerner looks like it shuts the usual month or so into the season if we kick off the season at the end July.

Like others have said I'm hoping key positions are recruited early then bulk up the squad after the season's started with loans etc.

The key point with Spence is that there's likely to be competition for his signature, so the likelihood a club could hold off a year and still get him is fairly slim. If a premier league club wants him they'll happily pay the money to secure the signing
