Should Chiellini have been sent off for the foul on Saka?

I thought that it should have been a red at the time but that was probably just me having my England head on and I'm no expert when it comes to the rules. Just seemed like a really cynical and deliberate foul to me but the England team are no angels either. Harry Kane loves to back in to a defender and then fall over demanding a free kick. And Sterling loves a dive too.

I’d say no

however, do you think if it was an off the ball incident and he grabbed his shirt and pulled him on the floor with such force, it would be a red card? Arguably yes. It’s funny how the perception changes when it’s during play, even though it was on purpose.

but when I was watching it, I didn’t think it was a red.
I think it’s serious foul play. Grabbing an opponent by the neck using your hands to stop them entirely. Tough call.

Studs on Grealish’s knee seemed more obvious.

Nevermind.

Does anyone remember the game against Villa when Traore got sent off early on.

Late in the second half I think it was Lansbury was way behind our attacker, who wasn't through on goal but was well away and with no intention to get the ball he swung a boot and clipped his feet. I'm pretty sure he got sent off and also that Villa appealed and the appeal was rejected. I see the incident similarly. I understand the taking one for the team and Clayton at times pushed the limits but there's something different about these two incidents, I suppose the fact it is simply cheating, being behind the ball the whole time, Clayton would often be gone past and take the player out as they attempt to go past, which is why I see them both as red cards.

Just googled it and the appeal was actually successful...

Definitely not a red. It was cynical but Chiellini took one for the team and his team mates would have loved it.

Saka is of course rapid and it shows what England failed to do the whole 120 minutes. Isolate the Chiellini and Bonnunci who lack pace.

Interesting that the Head of Officiating for UEFA has said:

It wasn't a red card for Chiellini or Jorginho
The decision to award a penalty to England against Denmark was correct

Yeah I don’t think he could have been sent off for:

DENYING A GOAL OR AN OBVIOUS GOAL-SCORING OPPORTUNITY

because:

The distance between the offence and the goal, also because of the location and number of players.
It was a yellow card...in a game earlier in the tournament a player from Ukraine rugby tackled someone in a similar position and got a yellow. I thought that the Jorginho tackle on Grealish's knee was far worse.

I think Jorginho should have been shown red. Chiellini debatable but all Italy would have done was shut up shop as only they can do and the result would still be the same. Just that one step too far.
Yep. England can't complain about the result really. There was a few moments in the game that might have seen England win, but overall Italy were the better team.

My Facebook was full of women who probably only watch one game a year (if that) screaming that it was a red card. Make of that what you will.

Given the laws as they stand and the kind of "custom and practice" in interpreting them, then not a red.

That said if Saka had gone down clutching his throat making out it'd strangled him (which it could well have done if it'd bitten into his windpipe a bit, then some refs might go for the serious foul play route. Might've been a more difficult decision in that scenario.

It's a strange one the "taking one for the team" type challenges. It's definitely deliberate foul play/cheating but in most circumstances there's not really any repercussions for it. Just a warning unless player picks up another booking. Similar to diving I suppose. Feels like it should more than a yellow, but not quite a red. Sin bin maybe?

It was close! When I saw them against Belgium I thought the best we could do was to get beat by them in the final. Saka was tremendous!!
