Shopkeeper arrested for beating up a burglar

A shopkeeper who beat up a burglar who fell through his roof has lashed out at police after he was arrested.

For me, anyone who enters your property unlawfully deserves everything that happens to them and would have done exactly the same as the shopkeeper.

Vigilante justice.

They seem to have fashioned a weapon to inflict serious injury or worse on the burglar. They are in serious trouble and rightly so.

The proper action was to inform the police that they knew someone was going to burgle them.

It's an odd one this Norman. I think on the whole it's better to have uk trespass laws than many states in the us where you can shoot a home invader.

You are allowed to use reasonable force. If you don't know whether they are armed or not, what's reasonable.

In an ideal world that would work, we are talking about Britain though and not sure the police would act on a hunch.

He'd already been once so I think they had a pretty good evidence that it was more than a hunch.

"They attached a kitchen knife onto a mop so they could loosen the ceiling tiles Urwin was resting on when he arrived."

To loosen ceiling tiles. Ha ha. Yeah, the judge is going to buy that one

I agree you can't use a knife or arm yourself with any weapon but Urwin should not have been on the roof and it sounds like it wasn't the first time he had targeted the shop. Anyone going into someone else's property should be prepared to get a beating. People like Urwin feel they can break into, and take whatever they want whilst causing damage to the property to gain access.

He was released without charge (the shopkeeper) so who's to say he didn't use reasonable force?

No sympathy for the burglar whatsoever. I recognise the name from when I was on the force 20 years ago so clearly a waste of oxygen.

Surprised they arrested the shopkeeper like they did. I understand they had to arrest and interview him (gathering evidence to make decision whether to charge) but for cases like that I used to make an appointment with the "suspect" for them to turn up to the station where I would then "arrest" them at the front desk, interview them then release them straight away. Much more civilised.

Does seem like it could have been managed in a better manner.

Surprised they were released without charge too in fairness. Knife on a mop in a stakeout sounds dodgey as regardless of how much of a scumbag the other guy is.

And wait for them to rock up a week later once the damage had been caused and items stolen?

It does! Although sounds like a bit of a crap weapon when you think about it. Maybe it was genuinely just used to knock the roof tiles out? 🤷🏼‍♂️

too many school boy errors

1. left the cctv running
2. armed themselves with the knife-mop thing... then didnt hide it after use
3. admitted what they had been laying in wait
4. admitted giving him a beating

A bed of nails on the floor would have been better for him to fall onto. Or rearange the shop so he falls into a chest freezer

I’d have sympathy with someone getting into trouble for smacking Anyone breaking into their property, but I understand why they would have to be arrested for assault to allow an investigation to be carried out…

otherwise you could just drag someone into your house and smack them about…

to justify assaulting a burglar it would have to be aggravated and consist of a threat to the owner..

Well at least justice was done in the end
the burglar was sentenced to a 12 month suspended sentence
that'll teach him 👍🏻
