Sheffield United’s fixtures

It remains very unlikely that we can catch them. However, if we were to beat them next Wednesday they might wobble. Burnley are a class above, Sheff Utd aren't, when I have watched them they are a decent Championship side with a few key players (like Berger) but not much on the bench. A build up of fixtures and a suspension or an injury might tip the one goal wins into draws.

Conversely, I think if we fail to beat them on the 15th they are as good as home and hosed.
if we win it might give the other teams to play them a bit of confidence and an idea how to beat them also.

one thing that I reckon we are benefiting from that Sheffield united wont is that other teams are not playing the same team playing the same system twice.

anyone they done previously and are playing again at least know where they went wrong the first time, now that might not make much difference in the results, but would think that a couple of teams don't let them do them the same way a second time.

I always thought this was an issue we have had during multiple seasons when we have had one half a great season under a new manager and the following half of the same or next season everyone knows what we did last time and have shut it down

Last season, they won their last 3 games in a row including beating Fulham 4-0. Got 11 points from their last 6 games. When Heckingbottom took over they were 16th and ended the season in 5th, their highest position of the season. Didn't lose two games in a row under Heckingbottom.
They've had one bad run under Heckingbottom in October when they went 6 games in a row without winning so, like any team in the Championship, they can struggle for a while but right now I see no signs of it. Since Carrick took over, they've played 13, won 9, drawn 2 lost 1, a better record than ours and including wins against West Brom and Burnley.

Right now, there is zero evidence that Sheffield Utd will implode to the degree that we could catch them. It's a triumph of hope over expectation. If we can keep on at 2 points per game, which would be a phenomenal performance given the season's start, we'll end up on 80 points which hasn't been enough for second place since 2012-13. Sheffield Utd only need 7 wins out of their next 17 games to get to 81 points.
OK, they won their last 3 games last season to get into the playoffs but, after pasting us 4.1 on March 8th last year, they then played 8 games up to April 18th and got 9 points out of 24. They can’t afford to drop 15 points this year!

Interestingly, they lost 4-1 not long after they beat us by the same score. Cant say for certain - but think it was Coventry City.
Last night`s "victory" was against non-league Wrexham, who are legends in their own head space. Even so, United found it hard to win, until right at the end. They huffed and puffed and nearly didnt make it. If not for the save of the Wrexham penalty by Davies, United would have been out.
Its like Carrick says - they`l always be "noise", but players need to focus on ourselves - on our next game and look at the table when we get to the end.

Their worst 10 game run under Heckingbottom was from their loss to Millwall to their loss to Reading.

During that sequence they won 3, drew 3, lost 4 for 12 points. That's presumably the sequence of results that their fans are stressing about.

If they repeated that in their next 10 games they would be on 70 points after 39 games. If during that time we continued at 2 points per game for the next 10 games we would be on 68 points after 40 games so they would be 2 points ahead with a game in hand. At that point, anything's on but to get there we have to get auto-promotion level results and they have to as bad as they have ever been under Heckingbottom. Not impossible but no real sign of it happening. Objectively, we are the team that is over-performing while they are performing roughly at their level since Heckingbottom took over so you would expect us to be the team that tails off, not them.

If we get to the play-offs then I'll be happy that we have purged the Wilder soap opera from the club and be in a really strong position for promotion this year or next.

Did anyone see the interview from Billy Sharp after the match? Seems like little Wrexham rattled them a bit. I really don't like the scruffy blades

I don't mind them in the main if I'm honest; a proper northern club. I quite like Sharp as a player too, no bells and whistles just an old-fashioned grafter who knows how to apply himself.
Naturally that has no effect on my wanting us to finish above them of course, tricky as that is.😁

I hope the players think we can catch then. Having a target drives you on. If they only believe they can make the play offs then the pressure is off somewhat. We need them going out to win every game and to get maximum points.

Imagine the kudos this team gets if we go up automatically. Would be some achievement. So I hope the players believe more than a lot of us fans do.

Confidence is high at the moment and despite what their approach is some of the players will have looked at the table and done some mathematical calculations, it's human nature.

I think they'll believe in their own abilities as a group to do their bit and get a great points total, unfortunately the likelihood of the Blades dropping enough points is a great variable which they'll have no clear answer to, the same as the rest of us.

Which is exactly why Carrick will be telling them to focus on one game at a time. You can't have a target to shoot for when the exact nature of the target isn't known.

I used to think the gap could be closed but thinking about it sheff utd will know the game against us is a cup final and will double their efforts. Even if we got to 3 or 4 points of them id imagine theyd recognise again they need to keep focussed and pull their fingers out to get over the line. I also think luton have more chance of catching them than us. We have tough games too vs west brom, luton, swansea away. Preston and norwich usually give us a tough game, hull are improving.

I'm not so sure on that.

Other than the obvious advantage they have of their having a game in hand that is, which tbh could play a big part.

There's areas of relevant form where we're not too different from them.

In terms of disadvantages, they have 8 games against the teams generally considered to be in the hunt for the Top 6, to our 5. Our GD is also superior to theirs, only to the tune of +4, but small margins amd all that.

Ok.. I know it will be a huge task to overturn the 10 point (plus game in hand) gap but..

Have a look at Sheffield United’s run of games from when they play us onwards. Seems they have most of the top end of the table to play with only a couple of dead wood games.

Whilst we have a few top end clashes ourselves it feels like our run is kinder than theirs and just maybe explains why they’re so far ahead at present.

They’ve built up some of that 10 point gap by playing the easy teams too. It could get very interesting in a month
