Shall we sack off the Villa game?

Apologies for awful spelling mistypes, wouldnt let me edit for some reason so it will have to hurt your eyes!

I think we see it more as a free hit. Few important players returning from injury, and will need minutes. Few players clearly need a rest, so a blend of youth and first team is my guess.
Don’t remember Ferguson throwing too many games, and that will be Carrick’s frame of reference

Looking forward to it - a chance to have a real go. No one expects us to compete - but then again no one did in perhaps similar circumstances in the Northern Final of the ZDS trophy back in 1990. A long time ago. But parallels to be drawn. Villa near the top of the league. Boro languishing or worse in the 2nd tier. And we beat them. We can do it Saturday too - but we need the special ingredient we had in 1990 - support. The community backing us and helping bridge that gap in the leagues.
Come on Boro.

Might as well add this to this thread. Didn’t see the other one!

Seems very low key. The crowd looks low at the moment. Everybody expecting to get thrashed due to lack of players and saving players for the Chelsea game. The match live on the telly at a strange kick off time (unless you are going to make a night of it, down the town)! They are the downsides but Micheal Carrick is upbeat. Does he have players up his sleeve? Finn Azaz, Greenwood hasn’t scored for a while, who knows what Latte Lath could do? What about Villa, going for the League and in Europe? Will they rest players? They’ve had no game for 7 days and their next match is 8 days after so, 1 game in 15 days. They will probably have a full team out. Might as well write the game off but, they are no Rotherham and it is the FA Cup. Boro 19/4!

I wouldn't say 'sack off' as such. Although I'd probably say prioritise Tuesday. So anyone 50-50 etc then 'rest'.

I would maybe give a couple of starts to some of the youngsters who have been in and around the squad in recent weeks. They deserve a go.

It's a difficult one. Our squad is already on the bones of its ars*. It's not like we can tinker to much. So had it not been for Chelsea I'd definitely have said go full strength.

Yet a two legged semi must effect Carricks selection thinking. I can't see us going absolute full strength Saturday and Tuesday. Especially after the festive fixture list.

I genuinely couldn't call who or what he will put out on Saturday. I don't think we can be overly critical if it's significantly weakened.

Rogers, Greenwood and (hopefully) Azaz will be available but can't play against Chelsea so I'd play all of them. Then I'd be maybe looking to play a fairly strong team but bring on subs after an hour or so.

"Sack Off"
I hate that phrase.

As for the match, we'll probably get thrashed in front of a low and subdued crowd.
It doesn't really matter but it's a pity it's live on TV.

I would not really agree totally with any of the three questions, but would let Michael Carrick‘s judgement hold sway.
I still trust his judgement. He is the man on the spot and knows of the fitness and limitations of his players.

I don't think we have to really.
The defence picks itself (Glover, Bangura/Engel, Fry, Clarke, vdB)
Rogers, Greenwood guaranteed to play as they can't play Tues (and possibly Azaz if he wants to throw him straight in)
And then Crooks, Hackney, Lath bound to get at least some game time either from the start or 2nd half / 60 mins.
Allows him to rest some from Monday if he wants to.

Carrick won't sack it off, and he'll play as strong a team as possible. I'd expect something like this...

Glover

RVDB-Fry-Clarke-Bangura

Barlaser-Howson

Jones-Azaz-Rogers

Greenwood

Think we'll see Latte Lath, Hackney and Crooks all get some minutes ready for Tuesday night.

I'm starting to look forward to it now tbh, despite the injury concerns.

Rogers and Greenwood will obviously start as they can't play on Tuesday.
Should get the chance to see Azaz if he's registered before 12pm today.

Keeper is no issue, left back and centre back shouldn't be either.

It's only up front, right back and midfield where we have to be careful because of a lack of depth.

Absolute nonsense,

who was there away in the Zenith data semi final when villa were riding high and we didnt have a prayer.

Turned out to be one of the best nights ever.

Thankyou Brenda for that memory!
I was at that game. Different circumstances in my opinion. That was a semifinal, with the chance of our first Wembley visit. This is round 3. We have another semifinal a few days later, are not too far away from the playoffs and have multiple injuries.

I’ve never once wanted Boro to lose in over 40 years of supporting them, but this is the closest I’ve ever been. Imagine if RVB gets injured and misses both Chelsea games? Or Hackney is rushed back and is then out for another 6 weeks? Not worth the risk.

I’d prefer a 1-0 win, but a 1-0 loss would be better than a replay for me.
