Didn't realise he failed a medical at Boro when he was at Leeds, a bullet dodged for sure given he retired at 28

Vaguely remember that.

He looked a fantastic player during his first spell at Derby, but was pretty much permanently injured at Leeds.

Isn't the legend that leeds offered him a stupidly big contract that was met with stunned silence. They thought the reaction was because it wasn't enough so upped the offer even further!
The story of Johnson's contract negotiations with Leeds have passed into legend, a chilling damnation of Ridsdale's spendthrift regime. It goes as follows: Johnson had been earning £5,000 a week at Derby and his agent told him he wouldn't settle for less than £13,000 a week at Leeds. Ridsdale's opening gambit, however, surprised them both. "Right, I'm sorry, I can only offer you £30,000 a week," he said. Around the table jaws dropped in genuine shock. "Oh, all right then," said Ridsdale, filling the silence, "£37,000."

The "story" was he was on 5k at Derby, and they paid 7 Million for him, agent wasn't gonna accept anything less than 13k, Risdales opening offer was £30k, which soon became 37K when met with stunned silence!

Been a few people who have questioned this version of events though, mainly from Risdale's camp I'd imaigine!
