Season ends today?

EFL meeting later today. Expecting League one and two to be declared over. Championship in the balance. But they also need to decide what that means for relegation and promotion.

I hope the outcome is that all leagues are simply declared unfinished. The league table as it is stands for prize money and European places. But no relegation or promotion.

The same teams start again when they can safely. Possibly for a 2021/22 season.

This doesn t mean that football has to stop. During ww2 they still played matches but just not a full national league format.

If they are going to play matches anyway. they might as well finish this season.

They need to make a decision one way or another.

It’s clear now that the prem will Resume by hook or by crook but we need to resolve the matter of what happens to the championship.

The PL clubs are paying a combined cost of £4m to test all their players. This is money the lower leagues don’t have due to no fans being allowed in to stadiums.

There are also a total of 1400 players out of contract on 30 June with the majority in the bottom two divisions. If the league ends prematurely, they don’t have to pay them appearance money and other bonuses. If these teams are not willing to pay this then promotion and relegation needs to be scrapped.

I have been against sport starting again and feel the countries focus and resources should be on making care homes safe for the elderly and getting kids back into school. Not 22 men kicking a ball about.

Maybe just restart the premier League then.

I didn’t realise Liverpool next game is the derby v Everton so no no crowds gathering there then.

I expect the EFL seasons to be ended, but the PL to plough ahead.

It's all down to money, but I suppose they've got enough of it to pay for the necessary precautions.
I still think it's a mistake, but there's no stopping them with who's in charge of the government.

I don’t think it is just about “money” now, I think it’s more about the “brand” slipping behind the likes of la liga and the bundasliga.

as there is no way the perm will sit back and let the Germans be the only show in town.

If they don't fulfill all of the fixtures, they owe tens to hundreds of millions to broadcasters.
They'd open themselves up to law suits from the clubs who are relegated/denied promotion/miss out on Europe.

The only reason they're worried about the brand is money too.
I don't think they're desperate to retain foreign fans because of their insight in to the game.

I don't think they're trying to rush it back because people are so interested in the relegation battle and the fight for 7th.

That's their own fault for not writing the contracts properly. They should have had contingencies for if a season had to be abandoned. That also goes for clubs with player's contracts. They think it's a special situation just because the numbers are bigger when in reality they should have all just been furloughed. It is 100% about money and it is ridiculous to think that finishing the season now is a good idea. It also could have been solved by having a contingency plan for a season being abandoned.

It's easy to say that with hindsight but other events have managed it. Wimbledon had pandemic insurance etc.

Without the Premier League paying for virus checking in the EFL, there will not be the resources around to play games. Testing in the UK is held back by a variety of reasons not all will be solved by more money for the NHS, so I don't think testing players etc at football games will stop others being tested. I am sure lots of private testing is taking place as I write.

Games in June and July will be have to be behind closed door. To me you need at least a week of no deaths to start opening up sporting events where spectators can't be spread out.

CV19 has been bigger than I anticipated back in mid March. I was expecting a shut down to the end of May of most of the UK economy. I was not expecting deaths of over 200 a day, 4 weeks after the peak.

It looks like total UK deaths with be over 55000 which is well over the 20000 I guessed back in March.

I think it’s been bigger than a lot of people expected, I think a good few thought the lockdown would only last for the initial 3 weeks.

Why can they not nullify the season then apply what has happened this year into a 'weighting' or 'handicap' system for next season. Maybe mid table start on 0 then +1 each place up the league to +12 at the top and -1 each place down the league to the bottom starting on -12.

Thus making it more likely that the teams that have done well this year will reap benefit for their efforts. Unfortunately this would help Leeds but nevertheless....

I had a similar thought the other day

top three get the same no of points

ie top 3 start on pts ahead
1st 3 pts
2nd 2 pts
3rd 1pt

bottom 3 start

bottom -3
2nd bottom -2
3rd bottom -1

No stopping them regardless of who’s in charge of the government. The PL is bigger than any UK government

The problem is the money involved in the premier League. You've got teams at the bottom of the prem who will massively benefit from the season being declared null and void, who will get an extra season of God knows how many millions of TV money, then there's teams in the championship that have spent ridiculous amounts of money who will fail to get that.

Teams in the prem earn a much bigger slice from TV so can play without fans, teams in the EFL can't. Yet they are going to have to face playing much of next season playing without fans also.

Dan Ashcroft has been making odious noises about B teams being back on the table in the lower leagues, so I imagine some sort of rescue package will be dangled by the prem with such strings attached.

Leagues one and two might be abandoned, and reorganised into regional competitions next season. They will have to stream their matches as a source of revenue as they won't have gate receipts.

The championship? Perhaps some limited play off competition to decide promotion?
Forget about European football. There won't be any.

I also understand it has cost wolves alone 4 million to set up a testing program. With the current level of testing we can't start any football. Regular testing needs to be in place for care home staff first as well as NHS.

And football is important. Life without joy is no life at all. Those with families gardens and green spaces to enjoy should think of those alone, with no garden trapped in cities.
