Score yourself - how big a Boro fan would you say are you?

Wouldn’t know how to rate myself but the only way I could describe it is completely obsessed. And plan everything about football which isn’t a good look at times to family and friends but it’s the way I am and I can’t see me changing. Just love it all I really do.

Taking into account many variables including many I cannot think of, (please add to) such as how long you have supported Boro? If you do or did attend matches at home or home and away or mainly follow on TV or the radio?

How far do you travel to watch Boro? Any major events you have sacrificed to watch a match?

Where you there during the really dark days in the 80's (not many did), did you donate to keep the club afloat?

Do you wear club colours when you go the match?

Have you watched Boro live at AP and the Riverside? Did you see Boro lift their first major cup and play in Europe? Do you collect Boro merchandise and memrobillia? Have you encouraged others to support Boro?

This is not meant to be a competition, it is self defined against your perception of other supporters you know or have an impression of, there is no right or wrong.

So on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the lowest (not much at all) to 10 being absolutely fanatic, what would you score yourself?

I score myself a 4.

I have followed Boro since 1961 (age 7) to present, 59 years. Watched most games at Ayresome, including the bad spell leading to admin. Early Riverside years had season tickets for 2 kids and myself. When costs rose went to selective games. For 6 seasons I manned the turnstiles before they went digital. Had to pack in anyway due to medical issues. Been to all the cup finals apart from the one we won! Now only watch a home game when health permits but do watch every game possible on line or listen to commentary. I would score a 9/10 but leave it to you. UTB

I have had an ST/SC since 1973/74. I used to go to most away games I could since I began work, but since relegation in 2009, I have only averaged about 7 away games a year. I have been to every cup final, including the Anglo Scottish Cup and ZDS. I definitely eat, sleep an fart Boro. My weekends (and by default, my family and friends weekends) are not necessarily as pleasant as they could be if we lose. I am a grumpy miserable curmudgeon after a defeat, but after a win, I am ‘tigger like’.

There are supporters who have a better record than me, especially since 2009 away from home, but they are not ‘bigger’ or ‘better’ supporters than I, nor am I a bigger or better supporter than those who have had the privilege to see the Boro live a little bit less than I. We are all Boro fans and we are a gang of equals that support the team as best we can in the midst of what life throws our way. We are all 10’s in our own personal way (I am sure that is what Nobby really meant to say by his scoring)
Good post mate 👍

Interesting question this.

I’m a 6 out of 10.

I’ve done 99% of home matches since 1973 (when living in Teesside) but done nowhere near enough away matches over the years to push up higher.

I think those who consistently travel away or long distances to home matches over a period of many years are the real ‘superfans’....and are probably either divorced or single.
I agree with the fans who continually travel more so with the cost of tickets, as well as fuel, deserve total respect
When I use to regularly go home & away most games, back then tickets were around £8, 9, 10, nowadays at least double

Took another look at this thread, great queation from Corco65 & some terrific replies from posters who show how much the club means to them, some cracking stories from local fans & fans from afar, even with no connection of the area

45 years ago I was a 10. Never missed a game home or away, Hitched round the country and on the rare occasions I could afford it on the coach. Went to a game night game to Fulham with a mate in the 70's with 2 match tickets and 30p between us. Took us from the previous night at 11pm until 7.55pm the next day to get there (10 mins late and missed our goal in a 2 1 loss). It then took us until 2 pm the next day to get home. Loved every minute of it.

20 years ago an 8 . Bought 5 season tickets for family and went to around half the away games.

Now around a 3 . Rarely go as family have moved away and interest has waned although I always lay on the couch staring at Jeff Stellings scoreboard trying to mentally make us score :). Oh and I still feel sick every time we play and are so happy every time we get a result.

A 7 maybe ? Was at Hartlepool in 86 watched them home and away during Riochs time in charge. Went to the Zenith final all the Cup Finals under Robson and also Cardiff and Eindhoven. Lost interest under Strachan and gave up my season ticket. Been back a few years now but only do about 3 away days a season. More a family thing now as i go with my dad and son but a lot of the enjoyment has gone now.

Don't know whether to class myself a fanatic or a lunatic. I'll let you decide.
I didn't fall in love with the Boro immediately, I fell in love with the atmosphere at AP. The what seemed to be zillions of flat caps and their cigarette smoke
rising up to the floodlights. The magnificent green grass and the rising volume of noise and being there with my Dad. The smell emanating from the bogs
and the urine stained wall in the boys end that we climbed over when I was old enough to go by myself or with friends. An experience totally new to me.
It was the promotion winning Oxford match which put me over the edge.
How over the edge must one be to have a photo of Willie Whigham plastered on their bedroom wall?

It was cruel of my parents to return to Oz after an unsuccessful 3 years we had had when I was a bit younger. I was now in love with the Boro and now I was
put in the same situation that my father had put himself into previously and that was to be eagerly awaiting the newspaper cuttings and the pink sports gazette
to arrive from England from my Nan. At that time football was scoffed at by the aussies so their was little interest in the sport never mind the Boro.

When I got married in 74 I bought a brand new, enormous 3 in 1 stereogramme with LW and SW radio. The only match on the radio was the match of the day
broadcast in SW. The signal was so weak but I found that if I put my arm around the back of the unit and touched the aerial it would increase the volume by
a decibel or two.
Usual kick off here is around midnight and it was always a must that we be home by then and today it still is.
My wife came into the loungeroom and asked what the hell was I doing being scrunched up next to one of the speakers with my arm up the *rse end of the radio.
When I told her that I was listening to the BBC world service and that the Boro weren't on and I was simply waiting for them to go round the grounds for half time
scores. She looked at me in total disbelief and I knew then, on the spot, that she was thinking what sort of deadsh*t had she married.
Little did she know, that all, our future trips to England would revolve around where the Boro were playing.
It got to the stage that whilst in the planning of our next trip, she would ask where was the Boro playing during our holiday so she could work out where we would
likely visit. It used to anger her when sometimes I had to say I don't know, the fixtures aren't out yet.

Yes I returned to England for the Chelsea and Leicester cup finals.
I was there for the opening of the Riverside with my Dad v Chelsea.
Yes I convinced a lot of my workmates on the Sydney harbour bridge to follow the Boro. I used to tell them how could you not, you've been working here for
yonks with the word Middlesbrough plastered all over the place and I know that you're thick but surely even you can't forget that name
And yes, my whole life revolves around them.

I reckon a 10 and Superfan status, her indoors would also give me a 10 but that would be under the heading of Super ****.

Love and best wishes to all Boro fans around the world.
Stay safe.

Really enjoyed that, good start to the work this morning... best quote for a long time "How over the edge must one be to have a photo of Willie Whigham plastered on their bedroom wall?" Brilliant.

Cheers ticker.
Happy that it gave you a good start to the day. Hope the rest of it went well.
Funny thing is though, it was almost pretty much a serious question.
I mean, what more can a man say to prove his passion for the Boro.? Who else on here is going to agree or admit to the fact that they were waking
up in a moonlit bedroom as a young teenager, happy in the fact that they were being looked down upon by Willie Frankenstein Whigham rather than
say a Raquel Welch.? Who would you choose?........ Exactly..... and that's why I think, I,for that alone, deserve Superfan status.
Love my Willie me.
Now before this thread gets sidetracked for that comment, I would like to point out the fact that I spelt Willie with an IE and not a Y.
Just wanted to clear that up before admin accuse me of crashing the site because of all the traffic it would cause with blokes telling us
how much they love Willy too. Edit Willie.
Stay safe love from Oz

How long you have supported Boro? Over 30 years since my first match, ST for 25+.

How far do you travel to watch Boro? 250 mile round trip, was 500 when I lived in London.

Any major events you have sacrificed to watch a match? Not really, they just haven't fallen on those dates.

Where you there during the really dark days in the 80's (not many did), did you donate to keep the club afloat? Was 3 when we went into liquidation, so no not really.

Do you wear club colours when you go the match? Not since I was a kid.

Have you watched Boro live at AP and the Riverside? Yes.

Did you see Boro lift their first major cup and play in Europe? Went to all major finals.

Do you collect Boro merchandise and memorabilia? Don't really "collect" but have acquired a bit.

Have you encouraged others to support Boro? When at school. And now my son who is 3.

No idea how I score or especially care really. I go because I want to, not out of some sort of civic duty. Have watched every single minute since lockdown too.

I think we're similar in that respect. Some of my wife's mates think I'm crazy. Be prepared to make one or two sacrifices when the nipper's here though, especially with away games.(y)

Probably a 7.5.

Have been going since 1986 when my Dad first took me (although I did lose interest during the early 90's when music and boozing were more appealing). Was at Hartlepool in 86 (although not the Tuesday night game as I had school the next day, so my Dad went alone).

Has a season ticket for the last 20 odd years, despite living the majority of that time in Manchester, Leeds, Hertfordshire and San Francisco, and so each home game takes a large chunk of my day. I'll make probably about 60-70% of games home and away (some away games are like home games to me) but where ever I am in the world I'll follow the game (whether it be by via TV, radio or Twitter).

Having said that losing doesn't impact my mood that much, as I've come to accept it as part and parcel of following a team.
Very similar to me I'd say, though I'm a little bit younger. I did have one season in the early 90s where I lost a bit of interest (the year Lennie left) and was more into WWF (I was only 11 to be fair).

When its a Wembley trip - there are 40,000 - 10 out 10ers.

Most people on here are close to a 9 or 10 and I am sure if they were old enough or lived within 30 miles would have been at Hartlepool in 1986. (y)

yeah I will have to make some sacrifices! Gonna be an eye opener for sure. Just hope he turns out boro mad in a few years haha!

How far do you travel to watch Boro?

85 mile round trip living in Knaresborough for home games. Away games i cut down to within a 2 hour or so radius for a standard game

Any major events you have sacrificed to watch a match?

No

Where you there during the really dark days in the 80's (not many did), did you donate to keep the club afloat?

89/90 1st game

Do you wear club colours when you go the match?

Usually not, but where them proud when im out and about (or my duzza shirt) whether im in leeds or newcastle or sunderland

Have you watched Boro live at AP and the Riverside?

Yes

Did you see Boro lift their first major cup and play in Europe?

Missed cardiff let a mate have my ticket, lads who i go to games with were going for 4 days and i didnt fancy 4 days away for 1 game of football. saw the Lazio and Roma UEFA Cup games but as a rule if a cup game is on tv i watch at home (especially when i lived away from the area)

Do you collect Boro merchandise and memrobillia?

keep my replica shirts

Have you encouraged others to support Boro?

Converted an ex's son from man utd to the boro (lives in bridlington and still follows them/has attended the odd game with me many years after i split with his mam)
