Scientoligists

Get massively bad press. the pieces that Louis Theroux has done on them are pretty shocking.

Tom Cruise is a headline Scientologist and yet he seems a decent guy?
His helicopter dropped into my local a couple of months ago and the staff said he was an absolute gent, no selfie was too much,
And he had good press recently when he took some kids up in his chopper.

Seems a bit at odds with their public face?

Any religion that follows/harasses/mistreats those who attempt to leave is a cult, nothing more.
Yeah thats why I see it at odds with how Cruise seems to be.
Him acting like a decent human being in public isn't an act, it happens too often.
How would someone like that be central to what you rightly describe as being a rights bunch of cults.

Is this a serious post? Everyone knows Cruise is the face of the organisation and is revered as a Christ like saviour of the people. His job is to charm the world into letting them get away with whatever they get up to behind closed doors and occasionally in public. It’s something he’s become very good at and they have a very experienced PR team making sure everyone hears about his good deeds. Theroux and some notable others have given us a glimpse behind the curtain at the stuff they don’t want you to know about.

Those Scientologists are odious people and that goes doubly so for Mr Cruise.

Can't stand the man, but you have to admire his PR team 👍

I dunno, maybe I'm easily duped but TC seems pretty genuine to me. Mind he also seems fairly naive and childlike at times.

I wouldn't be massively surprised to find out he's just been conned like many others. There's no way he'll be treated like a "regular" member and I bet he's been repeatedly assured by the leadership that all the negative stories are just made up, anti scientologist propaganda.

Tom Cruise comes across as a very nice guy but sometimes it looks like he tries way too hard to be likeable…

may be he does it so people think “scientologists, can’t be that bad, Tom cruise is one…”

I am a Catholic, It seems to me that Scientology is just as valid. We believe in something, as long as it keeps people happy.

I can't believe some of the posts on here suggesting that Scientology is somehow a legitimate and more or less benign religion.

It was founded by L Ron Hubbard as a pure money-making venture, nothing more.

It operates on a system of brutal coercion of many of its members and as others have already mentioned, stalks, threatens and physically intimidates its critics.

Apart from that, while you can question the rational basis of most religions its whole belief system is absolutely and totally bats**t crazy.

Scientology holds that a Galactic Dictator called Xenu brought billions of his people to Earth (then known as "Teegeeack") in spacecraft that looked like DC-8 aircraft 75 million years ago, stacked them around volcanoes, and killed them with hydrogen bombs. Their souls however were immortal, remained on Earth and every human being contains the spirit of one of these immortal beings.

They are known as body thetans, are responsible for most of the physical and mental ailments of humanity and according to Hubbard, prevent people from achieving their highest spiritual levels.

The core Scientology practice of auditing, where a person is hooked up to a couple of tin cans, is an attempt to overcome the malign influence of these Thetans.

If the whole thing reads like a 3rd rate science fiction novel, that's because it basically is. Hubbard was a science fiction writer before he decided to invent a religion and he apparently based it on one of his more ridiculous plot ideas.

Whereas, a man called Jesus, the son of an all seeing, all devine, all knowing god was born from mortal parents, who walked on water, was crucified, rose from the dead among other things and will return to cast judgement over others, at some juncture is based on cold fact?
show me a bigger racket than Christianity?

I worked with a girl years ago that used to wear veil and abaya but used to change into ordinary clothes at work. I asked her why she did it, she replied that she would be totally disowned by the family if she was found out. Imagine that? It’s a daily form of controlling abuse.

As I said, you can question the rational basis of most religions but none of them remotely compare to the craziness (or the underlying malign and financially exploitative nature) of Scientology.
