Wasn’t Southgate told to replace Turnbull with Jones, as Turnbull wouldn’t sign a new contract?

We were to replace Mark Shwarzer with Charles Itandje as his wage demands were unsustainable.

The banks had different ideas which changed our plans on a number of deals..

Not from me or people I know, although, he was terrible when he took over from Turnbull, but the cost cutting and terrible recruitment since 2006/07 was the main issue that lead to our demise.

Jones and Turnbull rightly took stick for their poor performances, for which people largely, but wrongly, blamed Southgate, he was just the patsy that had to do the selecting from a much weakened squad, recruitment had no money and Gibbo would not sell to buy.

Stewy D even put in a transfer request because the squad wasn’t strengthened as promised. He spotted in advance what was coming and was the REAL reason we were ultimately relegated and Sir Gareth wrongly hounded by fans over it. I am sure some fans may, given hindsight, see that now. Edit: (although looking above Gibbo gets away scot free still while Sir Gareth takes the flack) Never ceases to amaze me that people still can’t see what was staring them in the face.

Correct the squad was weakened by the club, and Gibson, but Southgate made terrible decisions too. He had a £13M striker and played him isolated up front on his own when all evidence from Heerenveen was that he needed to be played with more support and two wingers. What did Southgate do? Refused to play Adam Johnson and played Downing as a number 10, playing Aliadiere on the wing instead. We also had the master stroke of Matthew Bates in midfield...

A £13M striker he is on record as saying he never wanted . He had a bad press as much as a poor hand. Not all was his fault as people imply.

Southgate cost us. His decision to make Jones/Turnbull the goalkeepers was just one of his many mistakes.

Playing Matty Bates as a CM another. Some very odd managerial decisions that season.

The squad was terrible though. Letting Boateng, Cattermole and Rochemback all leave and replacing them with Digard was criminal.

Schwarzer got out at the right time.
