Schwarzer dropped?

why is everyone forgetting he kept putting transfer requests every season because we were only a one year extension only for him to drop it when no one came in for him

Not quite every year, that's an exaggeration. He was with us a decade, so guess what naturally there would be 2 renewals, He probably had 3 or 4 across a decade. Anyway he proved his worth time after time. How much did relegation cost us when we tried to replace him on the cheap?

I know popular opinion is set in stone that Brad Jones cost us relegation, but we only actually conceded four more goals the year we went down than we had in Schwarzer's last season, when he'd been pretty poor. I think he'd probably admit he'd gone stale and needed a new challenge.

It was only scoring 28 goals all season that did for us.

I was at the 7-0 as well, half our fans left at HT I seem to recall. I was actually filmed on TV singing away at 5-0 down I think and the commentators referenced that we were still in good spirits!
We were all singing about Henry going to Barcelona in the 1st half (as was rumoured) and he then scored a hat-trick.

Well popular opinion would be very wrong seeing as Ross Turnbull played in 22 Premier League games 2008/09, I think your memory may be mistaken

I know he played too, but it's always Brad Jones who gets the blame when this season is talked about.

Southgate cost us. His decision to make Jones/Turnbull the goalkeepers was just one of his many mistakes.

I didn't think Southgate should've been given the job, and I don't think he was particularly good at it, but I doubt it was his decision alone to sell Luke Young, Lee Cattermole, George Boateng and Fabio Rochemback and replace them with Justin Hoyte, Didier Digard and Marvin Emnes.

Not from me or people I know, although, he was terrible when he took over from Turnbull, but the cost cutting and terrible recruitment since 2006/07 was the main issue that lead to our demise.

Jones and Turnbull rightly took stick for their poor performances, for which people largely, but wrongly, blamed Southgate, he was just the patsy that had to do the selecting from a much weakened squad, recruitment had no money and Gibbo would not sell to buy.

Stewy D even put in a transfer request because the squad wasn’t strengthened as promised. He spotted in advance what was coming and was the REAL reason we were ultimately relegated and Sir Gareth wrongly hounded by fans over it. I am sure some fans may, given hindsight, see that now. Edit: (although looking above Gibbo gets away scot free still while Sir Gareth takes the flack) Never ceases to amaze me that people still can’t see what was staring them in the face.

Agree Pears is the best keeper I have seen at Boro and as Mustoes Boots post above he kept putting transfer requests every season which is one of the reasons he will never be a hero of mine.
Watched them both in their prime and I don’t agree.

Pears was a top top tier two keeper but was awful in his one top flight season. Case of rose tinted glasses I’m afraid.

Schwarzer was miles better. One of the best 5 keepers in the league during his prime years

Here’s Pears only top flight season, starts with an error with a weak punch at Derby and goes downhill from there

Wasn’t Southgate told to replace Turnbull with Jones, as Turnbull wouldn’t sign a new contract?
